1. Fur Bans in Poland & New York

Poland 🇵🇱, New York, United States 🇺🇸

Viva! Poland campaigned against fur farming for over 20 years. With the help of Open Cages, It paid off.

Why it matters:

• Poland is the world’s second largest exploiter for fur behind China.

• Over 3 million Foxes, Minks, and Raccoons live their whole lives on metal wires until they’re killed.

Poland deciding to ban fur is a huge win for these animals!

How it happened:
Thousands of Polish citizens sent hand written cards to their president with one message: end fur farming. It might’ve been the nail in the coffin.

The backstory:

“Cezary Wyszyński, a trustee of Viva! Poland, has fought tirelessly for a ban at great personal risk, investigating farms that can only be described as hell on earth and lobbying politicians to support the Bill.”

I know I said just one big win, but did I mention that New York Fashion Week also banned fur? It’s not like the The Council of Fashion Designers of America can get fur from Poland anymore anyways. :)

2. Major City Makes Plant-Based Default

Minnesota, United States 🇺🇸
‎ ‎

Fellow Vegan Activist is going to like this one:

1.2 million Minnesotans will now get plant-based meals as the default option at county meetings and events! Animal-based “food” is now only available upon request in Hennepin County!

Minnesotans asked for it:
A public opinion survey conducted earlier this year in Hennepin County found…

• 69.5% of respondents supported increased government purchasing of plant-based foods.

• 86.3% of respondents said local government should act to reduce the environmental impact of food consumption.

With the help of Mercy for Animal’s Civic Plate and Wholesome Minnesota, thousands of animals will be spared from being exploited for lunch time sandwiches.

3. 1st Ever Vegan @ Mr. Olympia

Torre Washington, 50+ year old IFBB Pro and Vegan since 1988, will be the first Vegan to go to the Olympics of bodybuilding. He’ll face head to head with bodybuilders on the biggest bodybuilding stage in the world.

Winner of the 2025 Ben Weider Naturals Pro Bodybuilding Competition and now going to the Olympia, Torre is a 30+ year Vegan and 10+ years older than his competition!

4. Army Banned from Killing Goats and Pigs

United States 🇺🇸

US Army Medics trained by operating on goats and pigs shot with high caliber rifles. Since 1984, the US Army has shot thousands of goats and pigs in these “wound labs.”

Activists fought for alternatives:

• In 2017, PETA and PCRM backed the BEST Practices Act. This tried to make the military use Human simulator tech, and failed.

• The PETA and PCRM backed 2018 National Defense Authorization Act won. They made human-simulation technology the trauma training gold standard!

The US Coast Guard switched to using the tech, but the other military branches didn’t follow.

Now, the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act orders ALL US millitary branches:

(1) ensure that live animals, including dogs, cats, nonhuman primates, and marine mammals, are not used in any live fire trauma training conducted by the Department of Defense; and

(2) in conducting such training, replace such live animals, to the extent determined necessary by the Secretary, with advanced simulators, mannequins, cadavers, or actors.

This is a major VEGAN VICTORY for thousands of Goats and Pigs. — DL

These important yet under reported moments led to Non-Vegans committing to live Vegan!

• Paul Bashir, Vegan activist and founder of Anonymous for the Voiceless (AV), holds a Non-Vegan accountable.

• Oliver Loos, Vegan activist and AV Regional Organizer, proves how accountability gets commitments to living Vegan.

Why it matters:

These courageous activists do not get the praise they deserve!

In all levels of today’s society, accountability is absent.

• We do not hold politicians accountable for corrupt financing.

• We do not hold everyday citizens accountable for exploiting animals.

  ‎

The consequences of absent accountability are decay and death.

‎

The reality:

Many people live their entire lives with no one ever holding them accountable.

• Very few people live according to their own values (Vegan).

• Very few people hold others accountable to their own values.

‎

Yet, popular people will try and gaslight you into thinking we need more information. There is an over supply of information and an under supply of accountability.

‎

We need more accountability.

‎

At AV, activists work to supply the most important thing in today’s corrupted society: accountability. If we don’t hold Non-Vegans accountable, animal exploitation is normalized. If we do, animals are spared, and Vegans win.

‎

This World Vegan Month, I’m celebrating the activists championing one form of activism that just works: holding non-Vegans accountable. On behalf of the animals, I am grateful.

1. Four Major Fashion Brands Go Fur-Free

World 🌎

Condé Nast, the parent company for Vogue, Glamour, GQ, Vanity Fair and more, announced a fur-free policy for all 22 of its publications!

Why it matters:
1 billion people worldwide read at least one of Condé Nast’s publications. Deciding to finally ban images of fur is the nail in the coffin for the industry. Fur is no longer in Vogue. Literally. ‎

How it happened:
This was a multi-decade fight from relentless advocacy groups all around the world.

• In 1993, PETA disrupted Vogue offices with the iconic campaign, “I’d rather go naked than wear fur.”

• In 2025, CAFT led over 100 protests outside Condé Nast executives’ homes and commercial connections.

What the fur industry is saying:

“Fur is under attack like never before. Hardly a week goes by without news of some brand dropping fur, or a jurisdiction proposing to ban its production or sale. This tsunami of negativity fuels a self-reinforcing cycle. As major retailers stop selling fur, successful brands have less incentive to stand up to relentless activist pressure. With less business at stake, it becomes harder for politicians to resist activist pressure for production or sales bans. Worse, the barrage of negative news can create the false but potentially self-fulfilling impression that “society” has decided it is no longer ethically acceptable to wear fur”

After the announcement, the Boston Fashion Week confirmed it will also be fur free going forward!

2. Largest US State Bans Cat Declawing

California, United States 🇺🇸

Declawing involves the removal of the last bone of a cat’s toes. This is equivalent to amputating a human fingertip at the last joint.

VEGAN VICTORY:
After over 900 emails sent from In Defense of Animals to Governor Gavin Newsom, he finally signed AB 867 into law!

• This makes California the fifth no-declaw state after Rhode Island, New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

At least 40,500 emails to go until declawing is banned nationwide! — DL

After 139 years, the Texas State Fair finally got their 1st ever fully Vegan vendor, Vegan Vibrationz!

Respect to the twin brothers who worked for 24 days straight serving Bacun Jalapeño Cheddar burgers and more Vegan deliciousness to Texans!

4. First Retail Sales of Cultivated Meat

Berkeley, California, United States 🇺🇸

Mission Barns is selling meatballs made with cultivated meat for $13.99.

• This makes them the first company to sell cultivated meat out of a grocery store in the US!

• The others that came and went were limited to fancy restaurants.

The future of food is here. Only for four days.

5. 70 Year Old Aquarium Finally Closes

Miami, Florida, United States 🇺🇸

I went to Miami Seaquarium as a kid. I remember taking pictures in front of a giant shark hung upside down. The thought disgusts me.

The backstory:
Since 1955, at least 120 dolphins and whales have died in Miami Seaquarium.

One of these whales were Tokitae, an Orca stolen from her family when she was 4 years old. Tokitae spent the next 52 years in the world’s smallest Orca tank in North America - Miami Seaquarium.

• PETA pressured them to release Tokitae, and she had a scheduled release date, but it was too late.

• She performed until her death.

Tokitae - better known as Lolita - was Miami Seaquarium’s most famous animal. Her death, along with continued pressure from PETA, led to the eventual closure.

There’s a bittersweet feeling that happens when the oppressors I supported as a Non-Vegan end up losing. Now, for me and other marine animals, this is a VEGAN VICTORY worth some champagne. — DL

Australia 🇦🇺

Australia creates a park ~5.5x the size of New York City to protect their national treasure. :)

Why it matters:
2025 has been the worst year ever for Australian forest and habitat destruction. Yet, these are home to more than 100 threatened species including Gliders, Owls, and Koalas.

How it’s happening:

• Reserved 476,000-hectares (roughly the size of the Grand Canyon National Park)

  • An immediate moratorium on deforestation

• A comprehensive worker and industry support package

  • $6 million for community and small businesses

  • $60 million to establish the park

The bigger picture:
This park will protect over 12,000 koalas, 36,000 Greater Gliders, and habitats of over 100 other threatened species. A monumental win!

2. Stop Puppy Mills Campaign Working

Denver just banned the retail sale of Dogs and Cats!

Why it matters:
Puppy mills breed and sell Dogs out of crowded, dirty cages. The sale of these animals as products creates systems of suffering.

Zoom out:
Last month, I said other cities would join West Hollywood in banning retail sales of live animals. While this ban isn’t as comprehensive, it’s a big move!

75% of the USA’s largest cities no longer allow pet stores to sell puppy mill puppies.

3. More Incentives for Plant Products

India 🇮🇳

The old deal:
Plant-based meats, soy milk, and even nutritional yeast taxed at 12-18%.
Animal-proteins taxed at 5%. You and I both know this isn’t fair or good…

The new deal:

• Plant products now taxed at the same rate as animal products!

The tax-reform also covers products beyond food… Cosmetics, home goods, electronics, medicines, and even transportation.

Why it matters:
This incentive increases accessibility to plenty of Vegan foods! Going Vegan in India just got easier. :)

4. Big Europe Investment Towards Vegan Future

Denmark 🇩🇰 Czechia 🇨🇿 Portugal 🇵🇹

Uniting organizations across Europe want a VEGAN WORLD NOW, and they’re putting their money where their mouth is.

Here’s the breakdown of a new and big $2.5 million USD investment:

• Portugal to support farmers to grow legumes and create new legume-based products.

• Czechia to expand plant-based options across their government.

• Denmark to teach plant-based nutrition classes to doctors.

Zoom out:
2 months ago, I said I was watching for progress in “Denmark’s Plant-Based Diplomacy.” Now I got you some more details. This project builds on Denmark’s 2023 roadmap for plant-based food. With Denmark holding the EU Presidency, they’re set to keep making moves toward a Vegan future!

5. These ALDIS Are Now Majority Vegan

Germany 🇩🇪

ALDI SÜD offers over 1,400 Vegan-labelled products…

• 43.6% of their range is animal-based (boo…).

• Now, 56.4% of ALDI SÜD’s entire range is plant-based (yeah!).

Vegans are winning!

It’s no coincidence that Anonymous for the Voiceless just did the yearly Vegan activism campaign in Germany this year. No coincidence at all. Definitely pointless activism that you should never do. ;) — DL

6. Big Demands for Products Vegan

Great Britain 🇬🇧

Lidl GB’s own-brand plant-based product sales have increased by nearly 700%!

What’s great is they said they’re just “responding to rising demand for plant-based options.” Their Vemondo range recently added 20 new products!

Dig deeper:
What’s more, these products outperformed their fleshy counterparts. Think, “bean burger doing better than Impossible burger.” The demand isn’t increasing just for plant-based products, but for whole-food plant-based ones.

Zoom out:
Since 2020, Lidl GB has been aiming for 25% of their protein sales to be plant-based by 2030. While some companies (Ahem - Aldi) are far past them in The Food Transition, this is a big step forward!

7. FDA Approved Fermented Chicken-Free Egg

Finland 🇫🇮 United States 🇺🇸

Onego Bio produces recombinant egg proteins through precision fermentation. It has received a ‘no questions’ letter from the FDA!

Why it matters:
Every second, there’s a Hen out there that’s in pain. I don’t want to be responsible for that, but I miss omelets. Onego Bio process uses 95% less land, 97% less water, and 100% less Hens.

Onego Bio’s Wisconsin plant will allow them to sell in the USA!

8. Ending Sepsis Testing on Mice

Kent, England 🇬🇧

The University of Kent pledged not to use animals in future sepsis research.

Why it matters:
Torn intestines, spilling feces into their abdomen. Fever, chills, diarrhea, shock, and multiple organ failure before they die. Mice and Rats endure severe pain as sepsis destroys their organs.

• Still, top scientists believe this slows the progress of treatments for humans.

  • Some researchers continue the cruelty anyway…

Kent is the first UK institution to commit to PETA after hearing about the suffering!

9. Over 100 Dogs Rescued from Puppy Mills

Havre De Grace, Maryland, United States 🇺🇸

Humane World for Animals rescue team took 100 Dogs out of a terrible life.

“You can’t even tell where the leg ends and the matting begins”

This described several Dogs matted with feces-covered fur before Humane World for Animals’ rescue.

1. Bill Sparing Animals from Beauty Testing Now Law

Brazil 🇧🇷

Brazil becomes the 45th country to ban cruel animal testing for beauty products!

Why it matters:
Rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice suffer for beauty products, like mascara. In a world where 3D human cell models exist, some brands continue to pour chemicals into their eyes.

• This animal suffering is unnecessary, and governments are listening to their pain.

• The law bans exploiting animals to develop any hygiene, cosmetic, or beauty product!

The bigger picture:
Last month, we saw Brazil weighing the idea of becoming the 45th country to sign this historic bill into law. With 80 other countries currently developing beauty products (ISFCC), the fight goes on. Still, Brazil took the leap and made big progress for animals!

2. Selling Animals Banned - Adoptions Only

West Hollywood, California, United States 🇺🇸

West Hollywood became the only U.S. city to pass a comprehensive ban on the retail sale of all live animals!

Why it matters:
Breeders sell fish, birds, hamsters, reptiles, and other small animals out of crowded, dirty cages. The sale of these animals as products contributes to their overpopulation and neglect.

Zoom out:
“We’re not trying to take away people’s ability to have pets,” one council member said during the vote. “We want to encourage adoption."

Dig Deeper:
Pet stores can still sell under the ban, as long as the animals come from animal control, or an animal rescue.

West Hollywood has a progressive history of trailblazing animal protection.

• They banned fur sales in 2011.

• They outlawed cat declawing in 2003.

  • Most U.S. cities only started getting around to it this year!

3. Processed Meats Banned in Schools & Hospitals

New York City, New York, United States 🇺🇸

No more carcinogenic processed meats! Instead, the new standards released by the New York City Health Department promote whole fruits, vegetables, grains, and plant-proteins.

Doubling Down:

• NYC Health+Hospitals offers plant-based meals as the default option for at least one meal daily (with 90% patient satisfaction rate!).

Now that processed meats are out of the picture too, we can expect even more plant-based meals to be served!

The bigger picture:
NYC is cutting down on chronic diseases and addressing inequities that make healthy eating hard. While better health is a valuable societal pursuit, I’m most happy that it gets us closer to a VEGAN WORLD NOW, for animals. — DL

4. Europe’s Strongest Woman is Vegan

France 🇫🇷

Angeline Berva, a Vegan of 14 years, set a world record in the Axle Deadlift. She lifted 301 kg and won the Official Strongman European Championships!

5. New Vegan Certifications Meeting Demand

Taiwan 🇹🇼

Taiwan has launched the world's third official national Vegan certification label (全植物素 VEGAN). Only behind Argentina and Japan.

Numbers going up:
The Vegan food market is set to hit $37.5 billion by 2030. Asia Pacific is set to be the fastest-growing Vegan food market with an 11.6% compound annual growth rate. In the wake of this growth, Taiwan is cementing itself as Vegan-friendly!

Around the world:
NSF, a leading global organization in public health and safety, also unveiled its new Vegan and Cruelty-Free Certification Program. The initiative is NSF Protocol 543: Vegan and Cruelty-Free Products (NSF P543), and it’s comprehensive.

As someone who only buys NSF-certified Vegan supplements, I’m happy NSF is taking their strict standards and applying them to an even stricter Vegan lens! — DL

Since the 1700s, Thurles has been forcing horses to race. In 2025, horse race tracks around the world are shutting down, and Thurles is one of them.

People are realizing that we shouldn't treat horses like cars, but with respect.

1. Food Labels Must Declare Animal Suffering

Switzerland 🇨🇭

There’s a new Swiss labeling law for products that come from animals who experienced painful procedures…!

How it works:
Swiss supermarkets, restaurants, small businesses, and even imported animal products must label how animals experienced suffering.

Examples:

• “BEEF from animals that have been castrated or de-horned without pain relief”

• “PORK from Pigs if castration, tail docking, or teeth clipping was performed without pain relief”

• “EGGS and meat from Chickens whose beaks were clipped without pain relief”

• “MILK from Cows de-horned without pain relief”

• “LIVER of Geese and Ducks that were force-fed”

The bigger picture:
Cigarette warning labels reduce smoking rates.
Calorie counts on menus lead to lower-calorie food choices.
Behavior change happens when consumers are confronted with truth!

This month, Switzerland became the first European country to ban fur imports!

By the numbers:
In 2023, Switzerland imported over $30M worth of fur from around the world.
Today, that number drops to 0.

• Tens of thousands of animals will no longer suffer and die for a coat or scarf!

Zoom out:
Over a decade ago, the Swiss government required labels on all fur products to show how the fur was made.

• This is much like the new Swiss labeling rule for animal products.

If Switzerland follows the same path, we might see a ban on imported animal products in the next ten years! — DL

3. Hospitals Increasing Plant-Based Meals

ProVeg Portugal’s Sustainable Meals Program will expand into four major hospitals!

Catch up quick:

• ProVeg Portugal has served over 58,000 plant-based meals across 90 schools this year alone!

• NYC Health+Hospitals offers plant-based meals as the default option for at least one meal daily (with 90% patient satisfaction rate!).

Between the lines:
When hospitals see “plant-based,” they don’t always see climate justice, better health, or millions of animals saved. They see dollar signs. Still, we continue to use this powerful lever to make a VEGAN WORLD NOW! — DL

4. The Entire Stadium Goes Vegan

London, Great Britain 🇬🇧

For 6 nights, Billie Eilish had 120,000 of her concertgoers eat only Vegan!

The backstory:
Billie Eilish grew up Vegetarian, and decided to go Vegan at 12 years old. At 18, she made history as the youngest person to win a Grammy. Now, she’s 23, but she’s still done more for Veganism than many have in a lifetime:

• During her 2022 Happier Than Ever world tour, she had the same arena go 100% Vegan.

• At each show, visitors were shown The Pledge. This campaign inspired her fans to eat a plant-based meal every day for 30 days.

• She gave Oscar de la Renta’s CEO an ultimatum - she would only wear their designer gown if the brand ditch fur forever. They did.

There aren’t many “Vegan celebrities” that leverage their power for animals as much as Billie does. Let’s go! — DL

5. National Parks Commit to More Vegan Meals

United States 🇺🇸

If you plan on going to Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon in the next two years, expect 50% of the menu to be plant-based!

Why it matters:
Xanterra travel collection serves around three million visitors each year. This makes it one of the largest plant-based food initiatives in public tourism. It's a huge win for our environment and animals!

6. Supermarkets Scale Back on Meat Promotions

For the 2nd year in a row, Dutch supermarkets decreased their promotions of meat!

By the numbers:

• Hoogvliet (-23%)

• Spar (-26%)

• Jumbo (-42%) + stopped offering discounts on meat all together!

By 2030:
11 major Dutch supermarkets will have 60% of their proteins come from plants.

• Currently, 25-33% of protein sales are plant-based, and boy can you feel it already!

The bigger picture:
Supply is still just one side of the equation. For a VEGAN WORLD NOW, we need to increase the supply of plant-based products and reduce the demand for animal-based ones. Promote Veganism!

7. Massive Cultivated Meat Facility Ramps Up

Wilson, North Carolina, United States 🇺🇸

The world’s first large-scale cultivated meat production site is built!

The bottom line:
Believer Meats is awaiting the US Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) final inspection before production. Fortunately, they received “no questions” from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their cultivated meat!

8. Investigation Leads to Mega-Dairy Shutdown

Roswell, New Mexico, United States 🇺🇸

When exposed, a Coca-Cola owned Fairlife Dairy Farm collapsed!

How it happened:
Animal Recovery Mission (ARM) investigators found workers abusing nearly 6,000 mothers and calves. ARM took the investigation to the local sheriff’s office and Department of Agriculture to open a criminal case. The Dairy farm was forced to offload it’s equipment and never operate again!

The pressure is on:
This is the 9th time a Fairlife Dairy farm has been accused of cruelty. It also backs two class-action lawsuits against Fairlife for lying to its customers. If (and when) they lose, we’ll have an even bigger VEGAN VICTORY!

9. Farm Closure Causes Nationwide Industry Panic

Kramolin, Bulgaria 🇧🇬

A small local animal protection group got one of the largest egg farms in the country to stop operations!

How it happened:
Невидими животни, or “Invisible Animals,” documented cruelty towards over 46,000 Hens. They told the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency that they’ll release the footage in seven days: “You have until then to act.”

David (and friends) meet Goliath:
Except, they didn’t just have footage ready. They had support from many:

• Open Wing Alliance

• Anima International

• European Parliament members

• National Assembly representatives

A cascade of wins:
Together, they managed to close the 16-year-old factory farm. Then, they got the Bulgarian Food Safety Authority to begin inspecting all egg farms in the country! When local groups are backed by global resources, even young organizations can win against entrenched systems of cruelty. Justice for Hens!

10. Bull Escaped Slaughterhouse to Find Sanctuary

Norfolk, Great Britain 🇬🇧

A local animal sanctuary likely rescued a bull that was destined to die!

Aww:
Lost and stressed, the unnamed Cow was running around the streets of Birmingham. After no one claimed him, Hillside Animal Sanctuary came to the rescue! They gave him big bales of straw and his first name: Liam. Liam now lives with 750 other rescued animals doing what he wants!

Unlike so many others like him, Liam’s story has a happy ending. :)

THE BIG VEGAN VICTORY

Lima, PE 🇵🇪

Peru protects 699,300 acres (283,000 hectares) of land, home to over 1,800 species in the heart of the Amazon rainforest. That spans longer than New York to Miami!

No more deforestation for factory farms here.

The new conservation area connects with three other protected areas as part of Peru's 30x30 initiative: protect 30% of its natural ecosystems by 2030.

Plus, the 16 indigenous communities that steward this land now have formal legal recognition.

As other countries attempt to sell or exploit protected land, this victory gives me hope.

Hope that we will preserve the lungs of our Earth!

1. Animals Gain Legal Status

IT 🇮🇹

Italy is moving past the idea that animals only matter because humans care about them.

Out with "Crimes against the human sentiment toward animals." In with "Crimes against animals."

The former law implies that animals are just objects that can upset Humans if hurt. The new law states that animals are individuals deserving protection in their own right.

This legal recognition for more animal rights in Italy strengthens the case for animal rights everywhere!

2. Dolphin Shows Banned Nationwide

MX 🇲🇽

After three years of pressure from activists, Mexico has joined Costa Rica and Chile. Mexico is now the third Latin American country to ban dolphin shows!

When the people demanded change, lawmakers delivered.

In recent years, oppressors have exploited over 300 dolphins across Mexico despite resistance. Many of these Dolphins were born into a cycle of confinement-related suffering.

No more:

• Dolphin shows

• Using Dolphins for therapy or non-conservatory research

• Breeding Dolphins

Dolphins currently in captivity will still live out their natural lives. However, they are retired from most exploitation and have stricter welfare standards.

The cycle of exploitation of these intelligent marine mammals is finally ending!

3. Cities Endorse Plant-Based Treaty

Parla, ES 🇪🇸 + Nova Lima, BR 🇧🇷

"Systemic changes are needed to transition from a food model based on exploitation to one that cares for the planet, people, and animals."

Parla became the first Spanish city to follow through with this and endorse the Plant-Based Treaty! Plus, Nova Lima in Brazil became the first Latin American City to endorse it as well!

• More promotions for a shift to a plant-based food system.

4. Annual Animal Rights Day

Every first Sunday of June, there is a special day: National Animal Rights Day (NARD).

Did you miss the 15th annual NARD events held to commemorate the animals who are lost each day by us?

Like in Bournemouth, UK, where over 100 activists marched through the city in silence. Or in Tabriz, Iran, where they did the same.

There were memorials.

Still, several speakers, live music, and a feast of Vegan food punctuated the memorials. I'm confident that energy was empowering!

5. UN Climate Conference Mainly Plant-Based

The UN June Climate Meetings with over 5,000 attendees is serving a menu that is 57% Vegan. A big win in recognizing the non-Human animal deaths that haunt our climate.

This may be an increase from COP28 66% "plant-based" menu in 2023!

9. Navy Bans All Dog & Cat Experimentation

Virginia, US 🇺🇸

The US taxpayer has wastefully paid for Dogs and Cats to be tortured by the Navy for “research.”

The White Coat Waste Project, a bipartisan watchdog group, seeks to end this problem: cut wasteful government spending.

After they successfully shut down a $10 million Navy laboratory aimed at electrocuting Cats, the Navy shut it all down.

The US Navy announced a ban on all experiments involving Dogs and Cats. This ban includes a review of all current medical research to ensure it aligns with ethical guidelines.

In an increasingly divided country, it is encouraging to know there’s unity against this form of animal cruelty.

10. Pathway for Transitioning to Plant Farming

BR 🇧🇷

90% of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest is from agriculture. Much of it for exploiting animals.

Brazil plays a big role in this problem.

This cruelty leads to over half of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions! It also makes it hard for Brazil to provide minimally processed food options.

Brazil needs economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially fair alternatives for their farmers.

Enter ProVeg Brazil’s Cultiva Project. Much like Mercy for Animals’ Transfarmation Project, it speeds up the transition to plant-based farming!

Every farmer will get a personalized plan to set up at least 2.74 acres (1 hectare) of agroforestry on their land and nine months of implementation assistance.

A great start and another win for the Amazon rainforest!

11. Factory Farm Blocked by Court

Shrewsbury, UK 🇬🇧

They kill hundreds of thousands of animals each year. They spray bird shit all over the surroundings and contaminate nearby towns.

They’re a moral stain and stench, and River Action UK has had enough.

“Our rivers are choking on chicken muck. Today, the court drew a line: no more megafarms…The reckless spread of intensive agriculture must end now.”

And thus, the UK High Court quashed a potential 200,000-bird factory farm. That’s 200,000 spared birds!

12. Elephant Exploitation Denied

Colorado, US 🇺🇸

For decades, Elephant exploitation was facilitated by two major companies:

1. A Texas-based exhibitor, Trunks and Humps, supplied Elephants stolen from Africa to the Colorado Renaissance Fair.

2. The largest cruise line in the world, Carnival Corporation, promoted excursions that force Elephants to be ridden.

After PETA unleashed 40,000 of its activists to fight for Elephants, they got big wins in return:

• Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) denied a permit for circus-style Elephant shows at the Colorado Renaissance Fair.

• Carnival Corporation pledged not to offer exploitative encounters with Elephants.

It finally happened.

They also introduced the Plant Based Treaty to the city, which brings even more major changes:

1. Wild Animals Banned from Traveling Circuses

Washington, US 🇺🇸

SB 5065 was signed into law. It bans the use of elephants, big cats, bears, and primates from traveling circuses in Washington.

It will take more time to legislate against the cruelty in food. Still, most people are recognizing it in entertainment. We know both are not needed, but this win is a big step to ending animal exploitation everywhere!

2. Bullfighting Banned

Michoacán, MX 🇲🇽

The animal rights group Todos Somos Animales has been hard at work for animals. Their Movimiento México Sin Toreo has won to get bullfighting banned in a 7th Mexican state!

3. Animal Testing Gets Phased-Out

US 🇺🇸

The FDA and EPA want animal testing to be the exception, not the rule.

The FDA is replacing animal testing to develop drugs with more human-relevant methods. They're also incentivizing the transition by prioritizing the review of studies that use non-Animal methods!

Many animals are currently used to test the safety of pesticides and herbicides. The EPA aims to phase out animal testing by 2035. There is also a commitment to retire some of the test animals as soon as this year!

A strong 86% of Americans believe in the replacement of animal testing. The University of Arizona is already ahead, replacing animals in surgery training!

4. Plant-Based Nutrition Mandates

CH 🇨🇭 + ES 🇪🇸

The Swiss are eating too many animals, and too few plants. Their government says that more diet-related diseases and emissions mean change is necessary. To do so, the new Swiss nutrition strategy for 2025-2032 puts plant-based diets in the spotlight.

Noelia Estraviz is the president of the Association of Families United for a School Vegan Menu (FEUMVE). The group has fought for Vegan rights in Spanish schools for years. This month, they finally got their first win: the Healthy and Sustainable Cafeterias Decree.

The law protects children's right to a 100% plant-based menu in schools. If this can't happen, schools must find ways to chill and warm food that students bring from home!

5. Play Catan the Vegan Way

We all know Sheep aren’t resources, they’re individuals.

PETA acknowledges this, and gives us a way to enjoy Catan without Sheep: hemp. An animal-free alternative to wool, Hemp is used for clothing, rope, and most importantly, in Catan. Plus, you can get literal VEGAN VICTORY points with this expansion!

6. Plant-Based Default at 200 More Hospitals

US 🇺🇸

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) teamed up with local law enforcement to rescue 150+ Dogs. The Dogs had significant scarring, and were likely involved in Dog fighting. Now, they’re receiving critical care and are free.

13. All Fin Whale Hunts Cancelled

Hvalur hf, an Icelandic company, and the last whaling company on Earth, has decided not to hunt Fin Whales this year.

Why?

14. Fur Industry Drastically Declining

China has the biggest fur industry in the world. However, from 2023 to 2024, fur production businesses in China dropped from 18,053 to 10,707.

41% of China’s fur producers went bankrupt.

Why?

Opposition to fur farming is increasing around the world. Europe, Japan, New Zealand, and parts of North America, have been implementing restrictions, phase-outs, and bans. This decrease in demand has lead to a massive decrease in supply, and the oppressors can’t afford it!

15. All Locals Outreached and 3 Join Protest

There are 2,400+ Cows trapped in Lowfields Farm. Activists reached every single door, every street, every corner, and every letterbox to leave a leaflet exposing this reality of dairy.

It paid off.

Three locals were shocked by what they read in the leaflets and heard from the activists. So, they decided to join the protest at the farm!

The protest was then covered by BBC North Yorkshire, Greatest Hits Radio, and more. The message against dairy is now in living rooms, on airwaves, and in headlines.

This win is a big light against the darkness of the dairy industry!

🇺🇸 All City Events Vegan by Default in Sammamish, WA, US

In a major win for non-human animals, the City of Sammamish in Washington has decided that Vegan food must be served as the default option at all its city-run events!

Just a few months ago, I reported that Hollywood, CA, did the same. Slowly but surely, the USA west coast is leading the way for how cities can stop contributing to cruel animal agriculture.

🇬🇧 UK Bans Bee-Killing Pesticide

Without the bees, so much of our “Vegan food,” would be impossible to grow outdoors. Fortunately, the EU knows this and has already banned the neonicotinoid pesticide, “Cruiser SB.”

This month, the UK banned the pesticide as well.

📅 Veganuary Breaks Records and Sets Sights on China

In 2024, I reported that Veganuary celebrated 1.8 million people signing up. That year, I helped by heading to the streets and encouraged people to try it!

This year, it looks like even more activists helped. Heck, even the entire City of West Hollywood voted in favor of a resolution and proclamation to promote Veganuary to residents, staff, and businesses!

This year, in 2025, Veganuary saw a monumental 25.8 million people sign up. That’s a 1,333% gain in participants! If Veganuary were a stock we invest in, we’d be rich. Fortunately, millions of non-Human animals benefit from this growth!

And we’re not even done yet.

The Veganuary team is using this tremendous momentum to partner with The China Vegan Society to expand into China for a NEW Lunar New Year version of Veganuary: Mangchun Sanyue (茻春三月), roughly translated to Vegan Spring March, or V-March for short. That’s right, more non-Human animals will be spared from oppressors in China for the entire month of March!

🏫 US Universities Double Down on Vegan Dining and Classes

Since 2011, the University of North Texas (UNT) has been operating the US’ first 100% Vegan dining hall, Mean Greens Café. Last month, they were rated #2 by Humane World for Animals’ Protein Sustainability Scorecard. This month, UNT is doubling down and committing to make 60% of its campus dining options plant-based by 2027. In Texas.

In California, Miyoko Schinner is leveraging her decades long, phenomenally Vegan expertise to teach everything plant-based at all nine University of California campuses. The course already has 55 students enrolled, and according to the Vegan Dairy Queen, they’re not all Vegan:

“Not everyone’s vegan or vegetarian either. It is an incredibly international group of students. We have students from all over the world – people from Asia, Africa, just everywhere.”

Since college campuses don’t really teach (or serve) Vegan cooking, this is a huge win for the next generation of students and for all the future non-Human animals spared as a result!

🏅 Vegans Win Michelin Stars, Gold Medals, and Grammys

Are you noticing? There were so many VEGAN VICTORIES this month that I had to group them! The abundance continues.

When I first went Vegan in 2020, there was only ONE Vegan restaurant with a Michelin Star: Seven Swans. Now, in 2025, there are FIVE, with the UK restaurant, Plates, becoming the latest (and first UK Vegan restaurant) to obtain a Michelin Star!

Winner of the 2025 Speed Skating World Cup, Kristen Santos-Griswold, a Vegan since 2018, became one of only two US short-track skaters to win Gold at all three individual distances in the history of the World Cup! The guilt must be so heavy for the losers that it slows them down, ha!

French metal band, Gojira (whose lead singer is an outspoken Vegan), has won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for their epic act at the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony! It was righteous. Give it a watch!

🍳 Surging Egg Prices Lead to Increases in Vegan Egg Purchases

Last month, I reported how there were very little eggs on US grocery store shelves due to increases in welfare requirements for Hens and avian-flu outbreaks. I mentioned that people may be satisfying their demand for eggs with products like the Vegan Just Egg.

This month, we have data showing that this is exactly what’s happening, and more!

Just Egg grew 5X faster this past month compared to the same period last year, 91% of Just Egg consumers are neither Vegan nor Vegetarian, and 56% of Just Egg buyers returned for a second purchase (or more), signaling a permanent shift in egg-buying habits!

Not only that, but competitors are swooping in on this opportunity, with UK Vegan egg brand, Crackd, entering into the US market this month, and so many others too!

There will be more outbreaks, but at least now there will be less people paying for them to happen. A new study revealed that shopping Vegan is cheaper, anyways!

☕ Vegans Continue to Win in Dropping the Milk Tax

Just three months ago, Starbucks dropped their Vegan milk up-charge. Then, last month, Scooter’s and Dutch Bros did the same, and I said “your move, Dunkin’.”

This month, Dunkin’ predictably dropped their Vegan milk up-charge. Now pretty much all of the US doesn’t have to pay extra for Vegan milks!

Canada gets this VEGAN VICTORY too, with Tim Hortons dropping the Vegan milk tax this month as well!

🐶 World’s 1st Cultivated Dog Food Hits UK Shelves

Three months ago, I reported that Meatly was conducting taste tests on Dogs for their cultivated Dog food products, and it went really well! In fact, it went so well that this month, Meatly launched Chick Bites, the world’s 1st cultivated Dog food that consumers can now buy.

The product combines plant-based ingredients with Meatly’s cultivated chicken, and a limited release of the product will be available at Pets at Home Brentford, in London, UK.

🎪 Animals in Entertainment Spared from Further Abuse

Following requests made by over 50,000 PETA activists, the Mysterious Circus has committed to going animal-free. Not only this, but the same pressure led to AirBnB and various other companies pulling away from Camel rides around the Pyramids of Giza.

🏷️ Carbon Labels Nudge Consumers Into Choosing Plant-Based Options

A new study found that small moral judgements (nudges) highlighting a food’s carbon footprint actually do help to nudge consumers into choosing plant-based options over slaughter-based ones.

In the EU, there are nutrient scores that rate foods from A to E based on how nutritious they are, and these labels work in the same way.

Right now, “Humane Certified” labels are misleading on purpose. I have hope we’ll soon see similar (better) labeling for animal welfare too! For now, I’ll take this as a small step towards a VEGAN WORLD NOW.

🐮 Anti Dairy Ad Plays in UK Theaters

Ads are powerful, and it’s part of the reason why so many kind hearted people are tricked into thinking dairy isn’t scary.

Animal rights organization, Viva, is fighting back. For what’s said to be the first time ever, an advertisement will be putting viewers into the perspective of a mother Cow to show the reality of oppressors taking her babies away from her for her milk.

🥼 PETA Saves Rats, Mice, Pigs, and Sheep from Cruel Experimentation

More major VEGAN VICTORIES from PETA!

After years of activist pressure from PETA, the University Of Bristol finally banned cruel forced swim tests on mice and rats, and the European Respiratory Society has committed to ending its use of live animals like Pigs and Sheep in all of its medical training programs.

The Mice and Rats are forced to swim until they “give up,” in an effort to measure “depression,” and the Pigs and Sheep are used to train up and coming medical professionals to perform bronchoscopies and thoracoscopies.

This doesn’t have to be this way, and thanks to PETA’s activist pressure, it won’t be anymore!

⛑️ 600+ Animals Rescued in Kansas, US, Malaga, ES, and Norway

Over 400 Roosters & Hens were rescued from a suspected Cockfighting operation In Kansas, US, 195 animals were rescued from a cruel, but unnamed operation in Malaga, ES, and the last Mink fur farm in Norway finally shut down.

The VEGAN VICTORIES MONTHLY just wouldn’t be as impactful without these life-saving actions.

I salute The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City, Malaga’s Civil Guard, and Norwegian animal protection organization, NOAH, for these righteous rescues!

🇪🇨 Ecuador Now Rules That Marine Ecosystems Have Rights

In 2008, Ecuador became the first country to recognize and protect the rights of “nature” at a constitutional level. What are “nature’s” rights? To exist, persist, evolve, and regenerate. Of course, these rights are often pitted against Human “rights,” which I assume include our interest in breeding animals to kill them in factory farms often separated from natural ecosystems. Fortunately, these laws also recognize the right of any person or organization to defend, protect, and enforce those rights on behalf of nature, and for payment of recovered damages to government to provide for the full restoration of nature.

Now, these same rights are being extended towards marine ecosystems! This is a big win, as there’s likely solid legal grounds for ending these factory farms both on land, and now in water. Speaking of…

🇺🇸 Washington, US, Bans Net-Pen Fish Farming

In my opinion, these Fish factory farms are orders of magnitude more disgusting than the factory farms on land. If you haven’t seen these Fish factory farms, you can here.

Then, you’ll understand how big of a VEGAN VICTORY this really is!

Millions of innocent Fish will be spared from a life of perpetual suffering.

🇺🇸 Massachusetts, US, Bans Cat Declawing

We’re gaining momentum! 70% of Veterinarians already oppose the cruel practice of literally chopping Cats’ fingers off, and many even refuse to perform it.

Last month, we saw a city in Illinois get a huge win with this same ban. This month, Massachusetts became the 3rd state in the US to pass the ban on Cat declawing! I’m hopeful that the momentum will continue and more states continue to ban the practice.

🇺🇸 Los Angeles County Mandates 2:1 Ratio of Plant-Based to Slaughter-Based Meals

In LA, the Vegans are taking over the government!

From now on, not only may Vegan food outnumber slaughter-based food, but ALL county food programs are required to provide a daily Vegan meal option and plant-based dairy alternatives.

It seems like California is leading the way in their recognition of the impact of animal agriculture on climate change. They really cannot afford any more fires!

🇺🇸 Colorado & Michigan Bans Eggs from Caged Hens

I’m an abolitionist, so it’s hard for me to consider this a big VEGAN VICTORY, but it’s a win in the right direction for Chickens in Colorado and Michigan nonetheless!

Cage-free eggs means higher prices and less supply. Prices that retailers and people already can’t afford due to low-supply from constant avian-flu outbreaks. Supply so low that supermarket shelves in the egg aisle are completely empty.

People may satisfy their demand by reaching for egg alternatives like Just Egg or the classic tofu scramble!

☕ Two Largest Coffee Drive-Thru Chains Drop Vegan Milk Up-Charge

Just two months ago, Starbucks dropped their Vegan milk up-charge. In the name of competition, Scooter’s and Dutch Bros did the same this month! All of a sudden they’re saying things like, “we’re encouraging customers to make more sustainable choices without an added financial burden.”

Yeah, okay… We know the truth is that activist pressure led to the initial win, and now they’re forced to ride the wave that two-tailed green mermaid started. We’ll take this VEGAN VICTORY anyways!

📈 21.6% Increase of Vegan-Friendly Restaurants in Latin America

In a new study conducted by Veganuary and Happy Cow, it was found that there are now over 10,000 Vegan-friendly restaurants in Latin America! This is huge, as in just 1 year, 1,700 more restaurants were added as either Vegan, vegetarian, or Vegan-friendly.

There’s even an entire festival dedicated solely to Vegan tamales in Mexico!

While Brazil took the lead in this study though, this is just more proof that all around the world, it’s getting easier to be Vegan.

📉 Dutch App Gets 73% of Users to Eat Less Animals and More Plants

Fork Ranger is a Dutch app created to educate people on the impacts of their “food” choices on Earth’s climate by providing plant-based recipes to users after they complete short quizzes and read educational info graphics.

After using the app, 73% of omnivores reported that they cut down on flesh intake by at least once a day. If they keep it up, this small win can lead to bigger long-term wins!

🏷️ 1st Cultivated Meat Certifier is Vegan

There’s only one VEGAN VICTORY in the cell agriculture space this month, but it’s a big one.

Finally, we have a way of certifying that a cultivated meat product is nearly up to Vegan standards.

6 months ago, I reported that V-Label became the world’s largest certifier of Vegan products. They’re not done yet. This month, they introduced C-Label, the world’s first certification of cultivated meat products! The only way to get certified under the C-Label is to meet extensive criteria: the use of animal-free-media and the proof that all interventions and procedures, in particular invasive ones, such as biopsies, must be demonstrably necessary, as well as being as painless and stress-free for the animals as possible. No animals are allowed to be killed in and for the entire procurement and manufacturing process!

🦊 250+ Coyotes and Foxes Saved From Slaughter

Coyotes and foxes are caught, bred, exploited, and killed for their fur and their urine across rural United States. Their fur is sold for fashion, and their urine is sold to farmers as a product to deter other animals from eating their crops.

Even though this is banned, some operations still exist in the shadows. That’s where the Humane Society came in to liberated over 250 Coyotes and Foxes from this Ohio hell hole.

The victims used to live in filthy wire cages, now they can be seen playing in the snow! I’m happy to end this month with a wholesome VEGAN VICTORY!

I urge you to prioritize plant-based proteins over animal-based proteins in the 2025 Dietary Guidelines. Not only do proteins derived from animals contribute to immense suffering, but they are also a leading cause of the climate crisis, driving deadly weather events through their significant greenhouse gas emissions.

In contrast, plant-based proteins, as supported by numerous meta-analyses, improve health outcomes by reducing the risk of our nation’s top killers: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and obesity. Furthermore, plant proteins lead to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, offering a more sustainable future.

It’s time to shift the focus toward plant-based proteins as the primary source of protein for Americans. Please prioritize them for the health of our nation, for the environment, and for the animals.

Mexican lawmakers will now have the authority to legislate on animal issues and mandate animal education to schools across the country.

It would not have been possible without help from Humane Society International, who drafted many legislative proposals and trained enforcement officials for months to get this passed.

Imagine if your oppressors chopped off your fingers. That’s what happens to cats who are declawed.

While animal law professionals work to pass a nationwide declawing ban, Evanston, Illinois charges ahead with a ban in the right direction!

🤮 After Veganuary, Participants Become Disgusted with Meat

A new study found that meat-eaters (animal oppressors) who take part in Veganuary are more likely to think that meat is disgusting after giving it up for the month.

This is more proof showcasing that behavior change leads to changes in our morality, and NOT the other way around.

Phillip Palmejar, a Vegan for 8 years, took home the gold for Pankration and Grappling!

Pankration started in Greece hundreds of years ago and if you’re anything like me you have no idea what it is. All I know is that competitors have added modern techniques from boxing and wrestling - similar to MMA - which makes it extremely difficult to master.

🍗 1st Cultivated Chicken Tasting in India

Ahead of regulations, Mumbai-based startup Biokraft Foods hosted India’s first formal tasting of cultivated meat last week.

They plan on launching the product at price-parity with “premium Chicken” flesh in 2025.

This just put India’s cell agriculture industry on the map!

🧪 Another Animal-Free Growth Serum Achieved

Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is usually the product that makes many cultivated meat products non-Vegan. Since some companies are still using this cruel product, an alternative is necessary.

Enter, British biotech company Multus. They developed Proliferum B, a new animal-free alternative to FBS.

Heres what Multus’ CEO, Cai Linton said about the new invention,

“We want cultivated meat to be affordable and accessible to all. To achieve that, we need to make media development much more efficient so cultivated meat companies can progress and scale faster.”

🐠 Europe’s Largest Aquarium Shuts Down

🏟️ Billie Eilish Makes Entire Stadium Vegan

If there’s one artist who uses her platform for good, it’s Billie. Not only did she encourage everyone to eat at Vegan restaurants during her tour, but she managed to make the entire SAP Center in San Jose, CA, US, completely Vegan for 2 days.

We’re talking Vegan hot dogs, pizza, cookies, nuggets, sliders, and even asparagus ravioli.

It sounds like the bare minimum for a Vegan artist, but if you’ve been in the event planning space, you know just how much of a win something like this truly is!

🐰 Rabbits Freed from Cruel Experimentation

Have you noticed?

In the last two VEGAN VICTORIES MONTHLY, animals have been getting spared from cruel testing left and right! This is thanks to the the US, EU, and now Brazil’s Pharmacopoeia groups!

There’s been a big push across the globe to phase out testing on animals. In this same month, a global initiative was started in order to train scientists to safely test cosmetics and chemicals without using animals.

Millions of animals will be spared because of this.

I’m happy to be concluding 2024 with epic VEGAN VICTORIES like these :)

🇺🇸 Berkeley, CA, Bans Factory Farms

Earlier this year, animal rights activists put Measure DD on the ballot in Berkeley, California.

This month, we made world history by passing it.

Berkeley is now the first city in the world to ban Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs AKA Factory Farms).

We did it.

We set the precedent.

🇧🇪 Belgium Permanently Bans Dolphinariums

Belgium just became the seventh country in the world to ban dolphinariums. They also banned the imports and breeding of dolphins.

Right now, there’s only one dolphinarium in Belgium left, and it must shut down.

Following the ban, only specialized shelters will be be allowed to take in injured or sick dolphins and other cetaceans. The sole purpose is to care for them until they can be released back into their natural habitats.

A big win for Dolphins!

🇫🇷 French City Bans Foie Gras

Pessac, FR, has joined municipalities including Bordeaux, Poitiers, and Montpellier in banning foie gras from being served at schools and municipal events. This makes it the the third city to do so this year, and the fifteenth overall in the country.

An epic victory for the thousands of ducks once force fed to harvest their fatty livers..

The mayor of Pessac announces that plant-based alternatives to foie gras will be served at all Pessac’s schools and catered city events instead! Maybe eventually they’ll use the new cultivated foie gras (keep reading)!

🤑 A Vegan Diet Saves You $657 Per Year

A new study found that when compared with a standard American diet, a low-fat Vegan diet has 19% lower food costs for a savings of $1.80 per day ($657 per year).

The biggest cost savings come from no longer paying $2.90 per day on meat, 50 cents per day on dairy products, and 50 cents per day on added fats. These savings were found to outweigh the increased spending of 50 cents per day on vegetables, 30 cents per day on grains, and what’s more, 50 cents per day on meat alternatives.

Imagine if the meat industry wasn’t subsidized… Still, the saving of money and the saving of animals makes a Vegan diet win once again!

💪 Beef Industry Study Finds Plant Proteins Equal to Meat

The study divided 17 healthy women into three groups and measured their muscle protein synthesis after a meal: group #1 would consume beef, group #2 would consume beans and whole wheat, while group #3 would consume what the study called “incomplete” vegan protein (straight up bread).

Obviously the meat heads expected the meat to win, but it turns out that when you match for amino acids, there was no significant difference between ANY of the groups’ muscle protein synthesis…

That’s because - say it with me now - PLANT PROTEINS ARE NOT INCOMPLETE!

They are just limiting in certain amino acids depending on the food. If you’re getting enough total protein (opinion - 1.2-1.6g/kg) from a variety of foods, you’re a winner!

Here’s a bonus report that came out this month showcasing how most plant-based alternatives are healthier than animal proteins anyways. ;)

🥇 Vegan Team Wins 48 Golds at Mr. America

Hey look, it’s a bunch of obviously protein deficient Vegans from PlantBuilt casually winning 48 gold medals across bodybuilding, powerlifting, olympic weightlifting kettle-bell, and strongman competitions!

How on earth do they get enough protein?

🌆 New Cities Make “Most Vegan Friendly” List

Mexico City and Ho Chi Minh City, Viet-Nam, just landed on Happy Cow’s annual “Most Vegan Friendly Cities” list for the 1st time ever!

Here’s more proof that the world is slowly turning Vegan.

🧓 UK Care Homes See 24% Increase in Plant-Based Eaters

Vegetarian for Life, a leading UK charity working on behalf of older Vegans and vegetarians, recently published a report showcasing that 1/3 of all care homes in the UK serve at least one Vegetarian or Vegan - a 24% increase from last decade!

It’s never too late to go Vegan, and it looks like even our elders are realizing this.

🧾 1st Cultivated Meat Sale in Hong Kong

Derived from Japanese Quail cells, Vow has created and commercially sold cultivated foie gras in Hong Kong. They call it “Forged Gras,” and you can get it in select restaurants in the region.

You’d think something like this would work better in France.

🍗 Cultivated Chicken Reaches Price Parity

Right now, Good Meat’s cultivated chicken costs around $20/lb (€3.23/100g), which is significantly more expensive than the $11.79/lb (€2.39/100g) that “premium US pasture-raised chicken" costs.

However, another cultivated chicken company - SuperMeat - announced that it is able to produce 100% cultivated chicken (85% muscle and 15% fat) with the same cost, taste, and texture as “premium US pasture-raised chicken” in just 4 days. It takes on average, 42 days to raise, kill, and “process” a chicken for consumption.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

It’s only a matter of time before the animal agriculture industry becomes obsolete!

🐶 Dogs Get to Enjoy Cultivated Chicken

It’s awesome that our companion animals get to experience this tech before we do.

According to feeding safety trials by Meatly, the Dogs were found to enjoy the cultivated chicken as much or even more than their normal diet. 50% of the Dogs continued licking the bowl after completing it and 75% of owners reported higher enjoyment than the Dog’s baseline diet.

It’s even more awesome that they enjoy it! We’re up next.

🐠 Activists Shut Down Major Aquarium

Dozens of animals were neglected and killed in SeaQuest’s care.

Following whistleblower reports of animal cruelty and pressure from PETA, SeaQuest Fort Worth in Texas, US, was forced to shut down.

Finally, marine animals may experience some relief after this win!

🦀 Crabs Freed from Cruel Drug Testing

Drugs need to be tested to ensure they’re free of contaminants including endotoxins. An enzyme found in the blood of Horseshoe Crabs clots in the presence of these endotoxins. It follows that we’ve bred and killed thousands of Horseshoe Crabs to ensure our drugs are safe. And yes, they do feel pain.

Except, we haven’t needed to use Horseshoe Crab blood for a long time… It’s not even very effective compared to non-animal tests! It was simply required…

The United States Pharmacopeia, a quality standards group that indicates which tests are accepted in manufacturing, now allows the use of non-animal derived tests.

Thousands of Horseshoe Crabs have already been spared as a result of this change!

🎨 Dog & Chicken Killer Turns Paint Seller

After 20 years of dirtying his conscience, Mr. Cuong, a former Dog and Chicken killer, said this to the International Humane Society’s International (HSI) Model for Change Program Coordinators:

“I don’t want to kill these animals anymore … I’m looking forward to a business where I have a clear conscience and I am not involved in slaughtering dogs.”

With this simple resolution and help from the HSI, 16 dogs were relocated out of Mr. Cuong’s slaughterhouse (and restaurant) and he is now selling paint and gas cylinders to local residents.

Another one down. Many more to go! For now, let’s take this for what it is: a win.

🇷🇴 Romania Bans Fur Farming for Good

Thousands of caged chinchillas and minks are forcefully bred, enslaved, and gassed for their fur each year in Romania.

Not anymore.

This month, the Parliament overwhelmingly voted (217 supported, 6 against, 9 abstained) to ban all Romanian fur farm operations.

Romania is the 22nd European country to do so, and with 44 countries in Europe, we’re officially at the halfway mark!

🇺🇸 Torture Breeding Pets Banned in Ojai, CA

Companion animals bred for certain aesthetic qualities face numerous debilitating health issues like intervertebral disc disease, syringomyelia, and just straight up not being able to breathe. This is called “torture breeding,” and it’s all to meet an aesthetic demand in the marketplace.

Since this demand for breeds like French Bulldogs is so normalized, we need to cut the supply.

And that’s exactly what the recent signing of the Companion Animal Protection Ordinance did. Ojai is now officially the first city in the USA to ban torture breeding!

The new law bans the breeding of breathing-impaired breeds such as French bulldogs, English bulldogs, pugs, boxers, Boston terriers, Persian cats, as well as breeds with exaggerated features, such as dachshunds, cavalier King Charles spaniels, and Scottish Fold cats.

A big win for the future of companion animals!

👮 Veganism Removed From NHS Counter-Terrorism Training

In the eyes of some of our friends, family, and even the UK’s National Health Service, being opposed to the killing of animals for 10 minutes of taste pleasure means we are secretly RADICALIZED EXTREMISTS. At least, that’s what the National Pig Association told them.

I wish they didn’t expose us like that…LOL.

In an effort to preserve our DEVASTATING SECRET, the Vegan Society had to intervene.

Thanks to their work, references to Veganism have now been removed from the NHS’ “Prevent [Terrorism]” training materials.

Phew! At least in the UK, we can go back to eating our grass in peace.

🏫 Veganism Taught in Local UK School

The Vegan Society is at it with another win by making our movement truly future forward.

The Vegan Society teamed up with the Jigsaw Education group to add Veganism to their existing “Religion and Worldviews program.”

Now, students in select areas of the UK will have the opportunity to explore Veganism through a wonderful lens:

“…a compassionate worldview that encourages respect for all living beings and our environment.”

Definitely not terrorism, and definitely a win for our future!

📅 Veganuary Works: 27% Still Vegan

I’ll just let the numbers from Veganuary’s 6 month survey speak for themselves:

37% are eating at least 75% less meat and other animal products than pre-Veganuary.

95% of those who are not fully vegan said they’re likely to try a vegan diet again in the future.

27% are still eating a fully vegan diet.

Based on the 5,931 survey responses, this equates to 1,601 new Vegans this year. If we take a conservative estimate of 50 animals killed for consumption per person per year, that means 80,050 farmed animals were spared by Veganuary participants for this year alone. And that’s just based on those who responded to the survey!

📈 UK Plant-Based Products Are Officially “Mainstream”

According to a new report by the Good Food Institute, around 25% of people living in the UK are now buying plant-based meat and milk more than once a year. 23% say they purchase plant-based meat at least once a month. 

While this isn’t 50%, it’s big enough for it to be called “mainstream” by food reporters and big enough for food corporations to respond in big ways…

🌱 136 Year Old Italian Meat Company Goes 100% Plant-Based

Gruppo Tonazzo, one of Italy’s oldest meat producers, has been slaughtering Pigs and Cows using “traditional Italian butchery methods” since 1888.

After owners Albino and Stefano Tonazzo saw a line of trucks carrying soybeans to one of their “farms” in Sao Paolo, Brazil, they learned that the energy needed to produce one unit of animal protein was the same as that needed to produce 12 units of plant protein…

That seed was planted 36 years ago.

This month, it sprouted. Gruppo Tonazzo made the decision to close all of its meat-related operations to focus entirely on plant-based proteins in their Kioene brand, already the leader in Italy!

Why?

“As pioneers and key players in this market, we feel a deep responsibility towards future generations, and we want to help protect the Earth from continuous environmental deterioration. We are aware of the need to help people take care of their well-being, starting with food.”

With over 100 products, enjoyed by 2.3 million Italian households, plant-based products like these are officially mainstream, indeed. :)

☕ Starbucks Drops Vegan Milk Up-Charge

Animal activists have sent over 160,000 letters and protested at numerous locations demanding that Starbucks end the Vegan milk discrimination.

Finally, we won!

Nevertheless, it’s not over yet. We must turn Vegan milk equivalence into Vegan milk superiority! I predict that one day, it’ll be Cow’s milk that has the up-charge, and I’ll be here to report on that Vegan Victory when it comes. :)

For now, no more up-chargies on our starbies.

🍔 Cultivated Burger Reaches Price Parity

Right now, Good Meat’s cultivated chicken costs around $20/lb (€40.52/kg), and it’s only 3% cultivated meat. The rest of it is comprised of plant-based ingredients. Not all cultivated meat is like this…

Bene Meat Technologies claims to have harnessed the power of scale and created its first cultivated burger at price parity with a premium Cow’s flesh burger.

This one isn’t 3% cultivated meat, but 90% cultivated meat. No compromises.

A huge difference for a huge win!

🚧 EU Blocks Hungary from Banning Cultivated Meat

When their entire animal-killing industry is threatened by cultivated meat, of course they’re going to try and stop it.

Not on our watch.

In July of this year, Hungary proposed a ban on cultivated meat. However, the European Commission has deemed the Hungarian ban on cultured meat “unjustified” and potentially harmful to the European single market.

We continue onward into the future!

🐇 Big Wins for US and EU Rabbits

Petco, a leading American pet supply store chain, has passed a new adoption-only policy for the third most popular companion animal in the US: Rabbits! No longer will Petco be supporting massively cruel commercial breeding operations.

Adopt don’t shop!

In another Victory for Rabbits…

The presence of Pyrogens - fever-inducing substances that can accidentally contaminate injectable drugs - have been tested using their bodies since the 1900s. This month, the European Pharmacopoeia Commission has put a stop to testing Pyrogens on Rabbits for good.

At LEAST 25,000 Rabbits will be spared from this alone.

Progress can be slow, but we’ve been speeding it up! :)

🚫 Missouri’s Last Animal Gas Chamber Shut Down

A huge Vegan Victory for potential companion animals in shelters!

With Missouri’s decision to dismantle the gas chamber, Wyoming is now the last US state that allows the use of gas chambers for euthanizing domestic animals.

One more state until they’re all gone.

👪 World’s 1st Plant-Based Festival for Kids

To help kids and parents connect the dots to the ‘why’ of a plant-based lifestyle, we need fun Vegan spaces.

Sarah Feoli, a Vegan mom of two with more than a decade of experience in running festivals, is coordinating the 1st ever Plant Powered Kids Festival in Brooklyn, New York!

I don’t have any, but imagining kiddos and their parents attend Vegan concerts, expert-led talks, and enjoy Vegan food at an event like this makes me think this is a sweet Vegan Victory.

I know there will be more to come!

🚜 RSPCA’s Catering is Now 100% Vegan

The UK’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has been under fire for lying about the enforcement of their welfare standards throughout this year.

It’s a Vegan Victory to see them listen to one animal rights activist group, Animal Rising, and implicitly admit that the “food” they “assure” as “humane” does not even have a place in their own headquarters.

Going forward, the RSPCA will only have Vegan food catered to all their internal meetings and events.

Change must come from within, and it’s not stopping!

🇧🇷 Slaughterhouses Forced to Pay Costs of Deforestation

The people of Rondonia, a city near the Amazon Rain forest, are struggling to breathe. Their city has been blanketed by wildfire smoke, a sign of rampant deforestation. The culrpit? Slaughterhouses, and this month they will pay!

A Brazilian judge found 2 JBS-owned slaughterhouses guilty of profiting off this destruction, as they bought, killed, and sold Cows from a protected area of former rain forest in the Amazon.

$764,000 is what they must pay in damages. These are peanuts, but it’s a right step towards holding these criminal corporations accountable for their atrocities! The best part is that the money will go towards reforestation!

🇺🇸USDA Expands Vegan Options in School Meals

Aiming to improve the nutritional quality of food and offer more options for kids with allergies, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, and seeds can now be served as a “meat/meat alternative” component! Bean dips like hummus are also exempt from being counted towards total fat.

Since these products are often cheaper, our kids are going to be eating a lot more black beans and tofu - a win for farmed animals and Humans alike!

🏥 90% Patients Satisfaction at Plant-Based Hospitals

On the 1st Vegan Victories Monthly ever, I reported that NYC Health + Hospitals will be transitioning their food service systems to make plant-based meals the default.

16 months later, the results are in: patient acceptance of the plant-based meals is 95% and patient satisfaction is 90%. What’s more, the emissions of the 11 hospitals have reduced by 36% and the cost of the plant-based entrees is $0.59 less than for meals containing animal products. This led to a cost savings of $318,000!

More money, happier patients, and less exploited farmed animals! It’s only a matter of time before other hospitals learn of this success… Speaking of which, I just sent this report to the clinical nutrition manager of the local hospital I interned at, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. :)

🐶 Vegan Dogs Healthier than Non-Vegan Dogs

Last month it was a Vegan Victory for Cats, this month we have one for Dogs!

A new study on 2,536 Dogs found that compared to Dogs who ate animal products, Dogs who ate plant-based were 50% less likely to develop body weight problems, musculoskeletal issues, gastrointestinal issues, swollen anal glands, and dental or oral problems. No health disorder was consistently more prevalent in dogs fed a plant-based diet.

What’s more, the Dogs who ate plant-based were 21% less likely to have multiple veterinary visits per year, 33% less likely to be considered unwell, and significantly less likely to be on medication compared to dogs who ate animal products.

🎶 This is the Most Vegan Concert of All Time

90’s Trip Hop Band, Massive Attack (who I’m hypnotically listening to as I write this), ran what seems to be the most Vegan, green, eco-friendly concert ever. Seriously, from bottom to top:

They chose a local place that could be run entirely on renewable energy and batteries, with no car parking. They incentivized attendees to bring their reusable containers for food, use public transport, and even provided an electric shuttle bus if needed. They reduced their equipment travel down from 6 to just 2 electric trucks. They banned disposable vapes, had compostable cutlery you’d eat the only 100% Vegan food on, and had compostable toilets you can then release your Vegan food into! They even send some of the event’s waste sent to a firm that extracts phosphorus from urine (seriously)… Did I mention the entire concert catering was Vegan?

And of course, the concert’s name is… Act 1.5.

After the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C target, of course! Look what Massive Attack frontman, Robert Del Naja, had to say:

“If what you’re doing’s not 1.5 compatible, it’s irrelevant. It’s simply a gesture, an idea. It’s not doing anything.”

Word.

💨 World’s Most Sustainable Protein Deemed Safe

5 months ago, I reported that Solein, a “protein made from thin air,” achieved commercial scale. This month, Solein achieved Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status!

Solein is 65-70% protein, 5-8% fat, 0-15% dietary fiber, 3-5% mineral nutrients, and contains iron and B vitamins. It can be used to enhance nearly any food - from noodles to plant-based meats to beverages, and it's set to release in the USA by the end of this year!

Vegan alternatives are about to get a whole lot healthier.

🥩 Marbled Cultivated Meat Wins Breakthrough Award

TissenBioFarm has developed an AgTech Breakthrough Award-Winning system to produce whole-cut marbled steaks using a novel biofabrication system that allows for the “ultrafast” production of muscles and fat in fiber form.

All cells. No animals!

Compared to conventional 3D bioprinting, they’re reportedly able to make the marbled meat up to 35,000 times faster (300 kg of fibers per hour). Where there’s marbling, there’s luxurious flavor.

We’re running towards a world where we can experience culinary luxuries, at scale, without the taking of a life.

🐓 Over 400 Roosters Saved from Cockfighting

The Humane Society removed over 400 roosters and chickens from what appeared to be an Iowan Rooster breeding and selling operation for cockfighting.

They’re on their way to a better life!

🐒 Activists Prevent Building of Monkey Prison

Local Texans and Animal Rights Activists of PETA pressured Charles River Laboratories, cruel Monkey experimenters, to scrap its plans to build the largest monkey prison in the west.

People like you and me can prevent 43,000 primates from a life of confinement, and we did!

Let’s get another Vegan Victory like this one to ensure the next monkey prison doesn’t get built. :)

🥇 Olympian Publicly Donates to Animal Rights Orgs

Last month, I mentioned that war will not end Veganism. Here’s more proof:

Yaroslava Mahuchikh, the Ukrainian gold medal winner in the women’s high jump at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, donated over 1 million Ukrainian hryvnia (over $24,000) of her prize money to Ukrainian animal rights organizations that rescue animals from Ukrainian war zones.

She may have won gold, but the animals that will be saved as a result of her win is a truly golden Vegan Victory. :)

🐀 NYC Pilots Non-Lethal Rat Control Program

Everyone knows New York City has a Rat trash problem. After years of animal rights activists urging NYC residents to prevent trash buildup and use contraceptives on Rats rather than killing them with poison, the “Rat Czar” (a real title) agreed!

The NYC council has unanimously voted to pass Flaco’s Law, which will introduce a rat birth control pilot program in two neighborhoods.

A huge Vegan Victory for rats, and a reminder to be Vegan and clean your home!

🍄‍🟫 Chicken “Farmer” Turned Mushroom Farmer

Last month, I reported that a Vegan chef transformed a Chicken “farm” to a mushroom Farm; two months ago, a Cat “farm” to a fruit orchard; nine months ago as well; and fifteen months ago too.

History shows that one thing is clear. There are many “farmers” often feeling as trapped as the animals do, and need some help. This is the missing link to end factory farming: actually transforming the animal farms into sustainable crop farms! If you’re Leah Garcés, president of Mercy for Animals, it’s called transfarming.

Unlike others, this $700,000 transfarmation involved demolition, replumbing, rewiring and implementing four distinct growing systems, and is built to last 20+ years.

It’s a big Vegan Victory because it’s the biggest transfarmation of all of them! Cheers!

🇺🇸 Octopus Farming Banned in California

A big win for protecting our highly intelligent friends of the pacific!

The Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) act bans the farming of octopuses on both land and water, as well as the import of farmed octopuses within the state of California.

That’s right. No imports either!

To me, this sounds like a strong moral stance against Octopus farming, especially given that the act was unanimously passed.

I’m hopeful we’ll see the same type of Vegan Victory when Measure DD - the act to ban factory farms - lands on California’s ballot this November. Stay tuned.

🇳🇱 Dutch Government Pays to Close Animal Farms

That’s right. For the next 5 years, the Netherlands’ government is paying farmers up to 100% of the costs associated with shutting down their animal farming operations!

All the farmers need to do is prove that closing down would lead to a positive impact on the environment. Given their line of work, easy enough!

Incentives moving away from supporting animal agriculture to instead ending it all together sounds like a pretty epic Vegan Victory to me!

🇦🇹 Austria Encourages Plant-Based Diets

First Germany, then all the Nordic countries. Now Austria has gone ahead and done it too!

Countries all over the EU are quickly updating their national nutrition recommendations to reflect the most current science: eating predominantly plant-based proteins and minimizing animal flesh is the best path for planetary and Human health.

Peace begins on our plates. :)

🇺🇸 Massachusetts Ends Animal Exploitation in Circuses

After over two decades of activism against these cruel traveling circus shows, Elephants, Cats, Primates, Giraffes, Bears, and more, get their much needed rest.

What just dropped? A meta-analysis and review on studies where Cow’s milk was switched for Soy milk.

What did they find? A clear improvement in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and inflammation in study participants who switched to soy milk.

🐱 Your Cat Can Now Go Vegan With These Foods

You’ve probably seen that ProVeg funded study floating around last year that showed how Vegan Cats had less reported health issues than their carnivore counterparts.

But Cats are obligate carnivores. They need the nutrients that comes from animal flesh. Right? Ah, but what if we put all those nutrients in plants?

🛒 Lidl NE Permanently Drops Prices on Vegan Food

Last year, another ProVeg study found that people are far more likely to choose plant-based foods when they are priced more affordably. Lidl saw this study and said, “okay, bet,” and announced a permanent reduction in the cost of plant-based meat and dairy alternatives.

Just 3 months ago, I reported on how Lidl did this for their shoppers in Belgium. This month onward, consumers in the Netherlands can celebrate this big Vegan Victory: price is no longer an obstacle for going Vegan!

🪖 Ukraine Military Providing Vegan MREs

There are over 800,000 Vegans in Ukraine. Many of them are on the front lines. For the last 2 years, volunteer organizations like Every Animal and Lviv Vegan Kitchen have been using donations to supply these Vegan soldiers with Vegan meals and snacks. They’re finally getting some more help.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense will provide kosher, halal, and Vegan military rations starting from December 2024. Here’s what they had to say:

“This is not only a matter of nutrition, but also of respect for the beliefs of each fighter.”

AQUA wants to be the Meati of Seafood. But rather than make meat from mushroom root protein, they’re making scallops from water, cellulose, and plant-derived flavors designed to mimic the oceanic notes of the sea life!

AQUA’s cellulose-based scallops and tuna were just given Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) status.

Pretty cool, especially considering they’ve got Michelin-starred chef Laurent Manrique as a culinary advisor to refine the taste, texture, color, and appeal. Them being cheaper is a huge plus too!

👗 Fashion Giant Goes Fur-Free After Activist Pressure

In a global campaign powered by animal rights activists across 35 countries, over 270,000 emails, 5,000 phone calls, and countless social media posts were sent to Max Mara - a $1.6 billion fashion brand - urging them to go fur-free.

And they did.

This is a stellar Vegan Victory for all the innocent Minks, Foxes, and more killed for fur. We may not be able to remove non-Human animals from our food system just yet, but we can certainly remove them from entertainment, fashion, and testing, NOW.

🐭 National Mango Board Ends Animal Testing

This USDA-funded mango promotion organization injected innocent Mice with cancer cells, force-fed them mango, then killed them.

The worst part is they’ve done many studies just like these - all ending with Mice dead.

The good part is that we’ve proven once again that if enough people tell them to stop for long enough, they will. After 7 years of campaigning, the National Mango Board has no future plans to fund animal testing studies again!

🥡 Chef Serves Vegan Meals to LA’s Unhoused

Okay, now how many Vegan meals need to be served in 1 hour to set a world record?

While the previous chef needs campaigning against, celebrity chef Supreme Dow needs more campaigning for! Each meal box was delivered to an unhoused person living in a food desert and included a savory Beyond Meat meatloaf, Spanish Rice, kale salad, and a soft chocolate chip cookie.

🇨🇦 Pig Industry Leaders Lose Animal Court Case

78% of voters in Massachusetts helped pass the Act to Prevent Cruelty to Farm Animals. The law requires “farmers” to provide Calves, Chickens, and Pigs the room to stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their limbs. The best part? It bans the sale of “products” from animals raised in conditions where they can’t.

It’s obvious that the barbaric animal agriculture industry can’t maintain it’s dirty profits with this law in place, so Pig killers from the industry tried to fight back against these bare minimum standards…and lost.

For every victory we accumulate, it’s another loss for the animal agriculture industry!

🇦🇺 Australia Bans Live Sheep Exports

As demand for sheep imported from Australia continues to fall and concerns for animal rights continue to rise, the Australian Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has decided to phase out live sheep exports for good.

Since the “farmers” now have one less profit stream going for them, I’m hopeful some of them will use this as the nail in their coffin to quit the industry entirely. Just two months ago, the UK banned live animal exports, so it’s only a matter of time before the EU and whole world follows suit. :)

🇦🇺 1st Australian Council Endorses Plant-Based Treaty

Australia is on a winning streak! Take a look at what Darebin’s Mayor said:

“I encourage other Australian councils and our region to consider the Plant Based Treaty. As one of the regions of the world that could suffer some of the worst climate impacts … moving away from meat and dairy would avoid the harm these industries [cause].”

She’s damn right it will!

🥛 Massive Dairy Converts to Vegan Milk Facility

Just two months ago, The largest Dairy company on planet Earth, Lactalis, just released their first line of plant-milks in Canada.

This month, Lactalis finished converting a massive 33,150 square foot ex-dairy operation into a Vegan milk production facility! Their message?

“We’re constantly following the consumer.”

🌱 Vegan Label Reaches Record High Certifications

Breaking the Vegan Society’s record, since 1996, over 70,000 products have been certified as Vegan or Vegetarian under the now world’s largest certifier of plant-based products, V-Label!

I prefer the Vegan Society’s certification process, but this label is so widespread and identifiable you can spot it from across the supermarket! With this number growing nearly every year, It’s never been easier to eat Vegan.

🥇 Vegan F1 Racer Wins British Grand Prix

7 year Vegan, 7 time F1 world champion, owner of Vegan restaurant “Neat Burger,” and one of the executive producers of The Game Changers, Lewis Hamilton, wins another Grand Prix!

Lewis often uses any opportunity he gets to humbly advocate for non-Human animals, and is a wonderful asset to the Vegan movement. Every victory he gets is another subtle reminder that Veganism exists, and Vegans achieve greatness!

🏫 University Inspires Desire for Vegan Meals

After German University of Bonn declared a meat-free month in its Hofgarten canteen, sales of slaughter-based meals remained 7-12% lower than they were before the meat-free month!

8 weeks post the meat-free month, students weren’t hoping for a “return to normalcy.” Instead, 80% said they wanted to see more vegan meals!

When the world around us goes Vegan, it’s a lot easier to stay Vegan. Let’s keep this cycle going and keep fighting for a VEGAN WORLD NOW!

🍕 World’s Largest Mozz Company Going Vegan

Domino’s. Pizza Hut. Papa John’s. Little Caesar’s. They all get their mozzarella from one source: Leprino Foods. The company supplies a staggering 85% of the pizza market’s cheese! This monopoly is responsible for millions of calves being separated from their mothers, but not for long.

Leprino Foods signed a deal for exclusive worldwide rights to market and distribute Fooditive’s animal-free casein proteins for use in cheese! Not only will this allow us to order cheese pizzas from Domino’s for gatherings again, but it will let millions of mother Cows and their Calves stay together again, too. :,)

🍗 1st Cultivated Chicken Approved for Sale in UK

While we may not be able to enjoy Domino’s just yet, Meatly’s cultivated chicken for companion animals was just approved for sale in the UK! The product doesn’t use Fetal Bovine Serum, and will be at price parity with slaughter-based products, too!

The future is here… In the UK… Later this year… Haha! Soon, however, it will be for all of our companion animals, and then all of us! With millions of innocent Chickens murdered each year just so the companion animals in our home can survive, this is a tremendous Vegan Victory!

🍔 Dutch Farmers Love Taste of Cultivated Beef

Dutch cattle “farmers,” food product developers, and industry representatives all tasted an animal-free Burger from the world’s 1st producer of cultivated beef - Mosa Meat.

It’s crazy that they even got the Cow killers to admit that the lab-grown Vegan burger that will eventually destroy their livelihoods was…

“delicious, juicy, nice, and succulent.”

Another victory in the books for the Vegans!

🚫 Ireland Removes Greenwashing National Dairy Ad

The Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland (ASAI) got to remove an Ad made by Ireland’s National Dairy Council which claimed that Irish milk is “naturally nutritious and sustainably produced.”

It’s not. This claim, and others were deemed as greenwashing the Irish people!

Thanks to decades of research and Vegan activism, the public is opening their eyes to the lies of the evil animal agriculture industry. They’re losing, and we’re winning.

🌾 Cat Slaughterhouse Transitions to Fruit Orchard

“I never expected to be so affected by the suffering of the cats. Now that I am aware, I feel an immense sense of regret and I am hugely relieved to leave it all behind me.”

These are the words of 61 year-old Mr. Nguyễn Đức Thịnh, former operator of a Cat slaughterhouse in Viet Nam. With generous help from the International Humane Society, he’s permanently closing the Cat slaughterhouse to transition the property to a tea, guava, and pomelo operation instead! :,)

Most of us weren’t born Vegan - we know good people can do terrible things. But when we make a safe world for positive change, we can achieve the greatest victory of them all: saving lives.

🐘 AI Discovers Elephants Have Their Own Names

Using a machine-learning algorithm, researchers identified 469 distinct Elephant calls and found that they use specific vocalizations for each individual. They even recognize and react to a call addressed to them while ignoring those addressed to others!

Just. Like. Us.

As long as AI doesn’t become sentient, the intersection between AI and non-Human animals is fascinating. There’s a whole cool newsletter about it written by ! 🇩🇰 World’s 1st Tax on Cruel Animal Farming

Denmark has become the first country in the world to introduce a tax on carbon emissions from animal agriculture!

The tax rate will roughly amount to $100 per Cow per year. Farmers are now disincentivized to raise and kill more animals. What's remarkable is that there are plans to progressively raise this tax rate, help framers transition out, and use a portion of the revenue to fund the reforestation of 250,000 hectares of farmland!

More taxes leads to higher prices. Higher prices leads to less demand. Less demand leads to more animals spared. Slowly but surely, we are removing animals from our global food system!

🇨🇷 Costa Rica Bans Archaic State-Run Zoos

Costa Rica’s last two state-owned Zoos, Simón Bolívar Zoo and Santa Ana Conservation Centre, shut down. Future openings of state-run zoos have also been banned.

Jaguars, Crocodiles, Spider Monkeys, and Sloths are just some of the nearly 300 animals transferred to local sanctuaries.

With plans to release them back into the wild, I’m hopeful these animals will finally feel peace away from Humans. A true victory for the animals!

🇨🇦 Canada Pours Millions into Plant Agriculture

Canada - the largest exporter of pulses in the world - double downs on plant-based proteins with a fresh $11 million allocated to increase the production of pulses like beans, peas, and lentils.

More pulses means less nitrogen fertilizer use, less greenhouse gas emissions, less public disease risks, and most importantly, less money available for animal agriculture.

This is a big win, as it’s another step towards a more sustainable and ethical food system.

🇩🇪 German Nutrition Society Promotes Veganism

After reevaluating its official position on plant-based foods, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (DGE), says Veganism is more climate-friendly than the average German diet and represents a health-promoting diet.

Here’s what Anna-Lena Klapp, International Nutrition and Health Lead at ProVeg, has to say about it,

“[this change] takes Vegan diets out of the shadows of the policy debate and places them front-and-center instead. We are delighted that this position has been published and we expect it to influence similar bodies around the world.”

🇺🇸 All City Events Vegan by Default in Hollywood, CA

In a major win for non-human animals, human health, and our planet, the City of West Hollywood in California has decided that Vegan food must be served as the default option at all its city-run events.

Just a few months ago, I reported that Los Angeles did the same for hospitals and schools. Imagine pulling up to one of these events or places and never having to worry about what to eat? With enough activism, that will be our reality!

🌲 Vegan Land Movement Reclaims Land from Dairy Farm

The Vegan Land Movement (VLM), a UK-based collective, uses crowdfunding to purchase monoculture grazing land. Through rewilding efforts, they restore depleted fields into biodiverse landscapes, effectively returning land to our Earth.

Previous successes by VLM include converting a plot intended for chickens into a fruit orchard. This month, VLM acquired an 11-acre dairy pasture, marking their sixth successful land buyout! Here's their perspective on the latest acquisition:

"When we remove land from animal agriculture, it's a victory for ALL life."

They’re damn right it is.

🌱 Vegan Nuggets Rank Best in Largest Taste Test

1,150 American omnivores evaluated 45 plant-based meat products across five categories and ended up rating nuggets from Impossible Foods, MorningStar Farms, Quorn, Rebellyous Foods, and SIMULATE, higher than their slaughter-based alternatives!

When we advocate for animals, we can bring some Vegan nuggets to confidently win more non-Vegans over! This small win can have big cascading effects.

🥇 Vegan Runner Wins 32 Marathons in 10 Days

Budjargal Byambaa, a 5 year Vegan, won the ten-day, 817.5 mi (1315 km) race by 74 miles. Woah. He’s simply inspiring:

“Long-distance running is different than any other type of running. It needs not only physical strength, [but] inner strength. Becoming vegan helped me find my inner strength.”

Truth.

Here, we celebrate everyone who is pushing the boundaries of what’s capable as a Vegan. Let’s channel this inner strength to keep fighting for a VEGAN WORLD!

📉 UK Meat Production Drops for 1st Time in Years

A new government report found that the total number of animals raised and slaughtered in the UK decreased by 4.1% in 2023, marking the first decline in production in over a decade.

Driven by declining demand and adverse weather conditions, this reduction spared thousands of animals from a life of suffering.

Additionally, this month saw Animal Rising’s release of the largest exposé of RSPCA-Assured Farms in the UK. With more people becoming aware of their humane-washing lies, it's likely we'll see similar victories next year too! I'll be here to report on them as they unfold. :)

🍍 Pineapple Leather May Become Best Leather

Scientists at Thailand’s Mahidol University have developed a new pineapple-based leather that is stronger than PU Leather and not significantly weaker than Cow skin leather!

Other alternatives from apples and bananas aren’t fully biodegradable, as they contain trace amounts of synthetic additives. Not this leather - it’s made from pineapple leaf waste and natural rubber!

With the bio-based leather category expected to grow 47.5% by 2027, this is a big win for our Earth and many precious Cows.

🍳 World’s Largest Omelet Producer Adopts Animal-Free Eggs

Grupo Empresarial Palacios Alimentación, the world’s largest producer of Spanish omelets, will use the EVERY Egg — the world’s first liquid egg product made using precision fermentation — in its flagship Spanish omelets!

Last December, I reported that EVERY’s Chicken-less “Egg” was unveiled at a three-Michelin-star restaurant and was said to taste indistinguishable...

Just 7 months later, we’re back with another big win. The amount of Hens spared by this partnership alone will be astronomical!

💥 Cultivated Meat Breaks Through Bottleneck

The University of Helsinki’s Institute of Life Science skipped the growth factors and has developed cultivated meat straight from stem-cells instead.

This is a huge victory for Vegan innovation.

Cultivating meat in bioreactors relies on using expensive growth factors to make the cells grow. This has been the major bottleneck in bringing cultivated meat to market.

Not anymore!

✊ Activists from 170 Cities March on Animal Rights Day

On June 2nd, National Animal Rights Day (NARD), thousands of animal rights activists held dead animals and silently marched across cities in memorial of the trillions of non-Human animals who are killed each year by Humans.

Following the march, there were countless speeches and celebrations of the progress towards animal liberation. It was a big display of compassion and a massive victory for bringing awareness to animals exploited around the world!

🐔 435 Hens Saved From Exploitation

A cage-free, organic egg farm in Oregon was selling “their” Hens and shutting down. With not enough buyers, the farm eventually invited people to take as many Hens as they could catch, with no money involved.

This was a big opportunity for local animal rights activists, who organized an effort to save as many Hens as possible.

In total, activists rescued 435 Hens! 435 individuals who now get to live out their lives free from exploitation. 435 individuals who now get to experience peace for the very first time. 435 individuals who now get to feel loved.

What a blessed win for them :)

🌾Dog Meat Supplier Transitions to Selling Seeds and Fertilizer

After years of tolling on his heart and mind, Hậu, a former Dog meat supplier, said this to the International Humane Society’s Model for Change Program Coordinators:

“I no longer want to be involved in the dog meat trade.”

With this simple resolution and help from the IHS, 50 puppies were relocated to a shelter, Hậu closed his shop, and began his new life selling seeds and fertilizer. His goal is to eventually harvest sweet potatoes!

For every year the Yulin Dog Meat festival continues, there will be stories of people fighting against it, and I’ll be here to share each of those stories with you. For now, let’s take this win!

🐶 4,000 Beagles Saved From Animal Testing Lab

After an undercover PETA investigation into a beagle factory farm, U.S. officials were prompted to cite the facility for dozens of violations of law and execute a search warrant. Envigo was found guilty for conspiracy to violate the federal Animal Welfare Act and the federal Clean Water Act.

These first-ever federal convictions of a supplier of animals for experimentation leave Envigo facing more than $35 million in penalties!

Following the conviction, the Humane Society of the United States coordinated the placement of these dogs with rescue partners so they could become loved companion animals.

A criminal conviction, a massive fine, and thousands of animals saved? A textbook Vegan Victory that makes me feel hopeful about our future!

🐮 Bullfighting Soon to Be Globally Obsolete

After 500 years of cruelty, the years of campaigning led by animal rights activists finally resulted in an outright ban of bullfighting in Colombia.

Just a few days earlier, the Spanish Government abolished the €30,000 national bullfighting award, making bullfighting a lot less relevant.

Only 1.9% of the Spanish population attends these displays of violence and 59% of the Spanish, French, and Portuguese population call for a bullfighting ban in their country.

At this rate, we’ll all live to see the days of bullfighting come to an end!

🇺🇸 Maryland Bans Use of Animals in Circuses

In another victory for animals in “entertainment,” Maryland banned the use of elephants, bears, and primates in circuses and traveling shows.

5 years ago, 54% of US citizens favored laws to prohibit the use of wild animals in circuses. It seems like public opinion is quickly catching up to law!

🇮🇹 Italy Bans Puppy Yoga

Puppies for Yoga get little food, water, or rest. This is to prevent defecation, peeing, or sleeping during long “working” hours. This is the unseen reality of the puppies in this cruel industry. On grounds of animal welfare, “puppy yoga” is now banned in Italy.

🇬🇧 UK Bans Live Animal Exports

If puppy yoga sounds stressful, imagine the same thing, but for days in a hot crate on a boat. For decades, animal rights activists have campaigned against this holocaust-like practice. Finally, cows, sheep, goats, pigs, and horses born in the UK and Australia will now be spared from being exported. Next step? Ban their murder!

🇬🇷 Greece Protects its Marine Wildlife

Greece becomes the 1st country in the EU to ban bottom trawling in its marine protected areas. The destructive practice will be phased out by 2030, with an additional €780 million going towards marine protection. This is awesome news for the sperm whales, Cuvier's beaked whales, striped dolphins, and endangered monk seals who call the South Aegan Sea their home.

🇮🇳 India Rules Animals Are More Than Property

A reckless driver killed an innocent Buffalo and injured another. In some parts of the world, a payment to their “owners” would suffice. However, in a landmark case, India’s Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled that animal rights outweigh private settlement. With such a large Vegetarian population and such aspirational laws around animals, India may be the first country to ban the killing of animals!

🇧🇪 Belgium Protects Animals in Constitutional Amendment

After years of animal rights campaigns, a paragraph was finally added to article 7a of Belgium’s constitution:

"In the exercise of their respective powers, the Federal State, the Communities, and the Regions, ensure the protection and well-being of animals as sentient beings."

Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland, Egypt, Brazil, India, and now Belgium, all enshrine animal sentience in their constitutions. I’ll continue to report on these countries as they align their eating habits with their laws!

🚫 No Meat May Sees Record Breaking Sign-Ups

In it’s 12th year, No Meat May saw a record-breaking 33% increase in sign-ups from 2023, with >76,000 unique participants!

🇬🇧 Lancaster University Transitioning to Vegan

95% of Lancaster’s student union voted to transition to a 100% plant-based catering menu across campus!

Plant-based Universities have had an incredible few years, with Lancaster University being the 12th university to transition to Vegan catering! Will your university be next?

🇪🇺 Lidl Wants Shoppers to Eat Vegan

Following a study which found that 42% of Belgians would purchase Vegan alternatives if they were cheaper, Lidl Belgium dropped prices of their plant-based products to the point of price parity!

Not only that, but Lidl Netherlands started to place plant-based alternatives right next to their slaughter-based counterparts, leading to a 7% increase in their sales!

If you read last October’s post, you’d know that these strategies have already been implemented in Germany. Now, two more EU nations are going to benefit! While I’ve always liked having our own plant-based corner of the grocery store, these moves are best for the non-Human animals.

🇺🇸 NYC Teaches Prison Chefs to Cook Vegan

The US treats prisoners like we treat the animals in factory farms: like shit. Rates of diabetes and hypertension among prisoners are higher than the average person, and 90% of them want more fresh fruits and vegetables. Now, the New York City Mayor launched a $100k initiative to teach chefs of Riker’s Island Prisons how to cook healthy plant-based meals.

Mayor Eric Adams is leaving no one behind in his initiative to turn NYC Vegan. First schools, then hospitals, now prisons. Everyone - including the non-Human animals - benefits from eating more plants!

🌱 Multi-Billion $ Retailers Make Vegan Push

Walmart is releasing over 300 new products under their new private label brand, Bettergoods. This marks the company’s largest food launch in 20 years! With the majority of them plant-based and priced under $5, eating Vegan just got a whole lot easier.

The largest Dairy company on planet Earth, Lactalis, just released their first line of plant-milks in Canada. If this isn’t confirmation that dairy is dead, I don’t know what is!

🛒 Cultivated Meat Sold in Store for 1st Time

Singaporeans can now buy GOOD Meat’s “GOOD Meat 3” at ~$20 per lb (~€4.00 per 100 g) from at the frozen section of the premium meats specialist Huber’s Butchery.

It’s official - cultivated meat is now available to “the masses.” If I had to guess, the US is next! Let’s see if my prediction that we’ll be able to buy it by 2030 comes early... At least you can already buy Cow-free dairy milk in all 50 states!

🇺🇸 Majority of USA Open to Trying Cultivated Meat

Contrary to perceived doubts about taste and health, a report by the Purdue Center for Food Demand Analysis & Sustainability found that around 60% of consumers are willing to try cultivated beef, chicken, and pork in restaurants, while around 30% are unwilling.

If they’re willing, they can change!

🐶 Cultivated Meat for Pets Reaches Price Parity

“BioCraft Pet Nutrition, a manufacturer of cultivated ingredients for pets, says it has achieved a commercial price of $2.00 to $2.50 per pound of cultivated meat, making it competitive with premium meat for pet food.”

It looks like the Dogs and Cats we live with will be getting cultivated meat first, anyways! Since food for pets is one of the largest contributors of other animal deaths, this is a huge win.

🧬 AI Team Creates Amazon.com, but for Proteins

Shiru just launched a platform, proteindiscovery.ai, that has cataloged >33 million molecules by sequence, metadata, performance, and functional use. The best part? It allows users to easily purchase proteins for food, agriculture, personal care, and advanced material applications.

Brb, ordering some casein-mimics for my homemade protein-rich Vegan cheeze.

🎭 Major Art Gatherings Going Plant-Based

The Cannes - one of the largest film festivals in the world - just banned Cow flesh from their menus. They’ll be replacing it with more plant-based options!

The Met Gala is a prominent fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. Lots of famous Americans attend the Met Gala to look good, and now they’re eating good too. From cultivated cheese to plant-based burgers, there was a larger selection of plant-based foods this year!

🚗 More Cars Have Vegan Interiors Than Ever Before

“More carmakers than ever are recognizing the demand for animal-free options and meeting it by using inventive materials—from cork to discarded fishing gear.”

While I’m sure cost plays a role, it’s pretty hopeful that cars aren’t just going Vegan, but are trying to be more sustainable too! See PETA’s list of >100 automotive brands that may offer Vegan interiors.

✊ Plans for Slaughterhouse Stopped By Activists

Apna Bazaar tried to get permits to build a slaughterhouse near Jacksonville, FL, USA, but a group of animal rights activists complained at the city’s hearing, leading to the CEO apologizing and withdrawing his application.

I doubt his reaction means he’ll “take his business somewhere else,” but I’m hopeful he came to the realization that a new animal killing factory isn’t wanted in any big city. Another win for non-Human animals!

🇺🇸 US Gives More Access to Free Plant Foods:

• The US WIC program gives low-income women, infants, and children a monthly stipend to spend on what was previously a limited selection of foods. Now, these participants get to enjoy access to four times more fruits, vegetables, grains, and plant-based alternatives to dairy!

The first 1000 days are the most important for the healthy development of a Human being. With increased access to powerful plant foods like canned beans, tofu, and quinoa, it’s getting easier to ensure people from all backgrounds can grow up healthily with plants :)

🇪🇺 EU Rules Climate Change a Rights Violation:

• EU countries - even “neutral” ones - are now legally obligated to protect their citizens from the threats and harms of climate change.

The lawsuit comes from a group of 2500 Swiss women over the age of 65 who were displeased with Switzerland’s lack of climate action to protect them from heat-related death! Taking this further, this can mean EU nations must reduce their production of animal-based “foods.”

• This follows yet another report from the European Environment Agency urging for the EU to quicken its plant-based food transition to avoid catastrophic damage to Earth!

🐴 USDA Bans Cruel Horse Practices Nationwide:

According to the Humane Society,

“Soring involves the intentional infliction of pain to a horse's legs or hooves in order to force the horse to perform an artificial, exaggerated gait.”

• The newly strengthened Horse Protection Act makes soring, as well as the use of devices integral to soring, illegal in all 50 states.

After a decade of activism to make this unexpectedly common but cruel practice illegal, it finally is. Horses can now walk naturally and comfortably :)

🇩🇪 Germany Opens 1st 100% Vegan Supermarket:

• Rewe Fully Plant-Based, a Vegan supermarket with over 2,700 Vegan products, opens its doors to a street that sees over 90,000 pedestrians walk by every day.

If it ends up being successful, the company has plans for a nationwide expansion. Germany has quite a large Vegan population, so here’s to hoping that’ll come true!

🇪🇸 48% of Spaniards Are Eating Less Meat:

• A pan-european survey found found that 48% of Spaniards report reducing their meat consumption over the last year.

This spells hopeful news for the Spanish Vegan movement, as 45% of Spaniards also reported increased confidence in plant-based products! When the alternatives are good, it’s just so much easier to be Vegan.

🇺🇸 Veganuary Promotes National Chicken-Free Week:

• With enthusiastic support from US brands and restaurants, Veganuary will be flooding the nation with information on replacing chickens and their eggs with plant-based alternatives.

This will coincide with the often overlooked International Respect for Chicken’s Day on May 4th. While everyone is saying “May the 4th be with you,” we’ll be saying “may we respect the chickens!” ;)

🇳🇱 44% of Proteins Sold in Dutch Markets Were Vegan:

• Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn has its own plant-based label line with over 200 Vegan products! They’re aiming to make 50% of all their protein sales from plant-based sources by 2025.

Albert Heijin has dominated the supermarket scene in the Dutch capital, so I expect no less from this same place voted by Happy Cow as the 4th most Vegan-friendly city in the world: Amsterdam!

🇧🇩 1st Vegan Festival in Bangladesh Was A Success:

• Documentary screenings, dialogue-sharing sections, cultural performances, sustainable fashion businesses, and of course, Vegan food stalls filled a small residential building in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

We’re everywhere, and we will celebrate it!

⚡️ Cultivated Meat Facility Outperforms Most Efficient Animal Farm:

• SuperMeat’s 3rd-party Life Cycle Analysis found its cultivated chicken facility had 47% lower emissions vs the most efficient chicken farm.

This is crazy considering that the “most efficient chicken farm” they used as a benchmark isn’t even real...It’s a farm that would, in theory, feed chickens soy from deforestation-free sources and use renewable energy for power. Even then, a better way exists!

🌭 1st Ever Cultivated Meat Tasting in EU:

“Meatable, a Dutch producer of cell-based pork meat, has become the first company to hold an officially approved cultivated meat tasting in the European Union, and the first in the Netherlands.”

Just last month, I reported that this company can go from cell to sausage in just 4 days, so it’s only a matter of time before these tastings turn into real sales!

💨 Protein “Made from Thin Air” Scales to Commercial Level:

• Solar foods is opening up a facility that can produce the same amount of protein as a 300-Cow dairy farm, but truly sustainably.

What’s great is that their protein, Solein, doesn’t use water and soil, it uses water and carbon dioxide:

“Solein is 100 times more efficient in converting energy to calories than animals.”

As food science advances, the food system of our Vegan world will be indistinguishable from magic.

🐶 120 Dogs Rescued from Dog-fighting Operation:

“This week the Humane Society of the United States assisted law enforcement with the rescue of over 120 dogs from an alleged dog-fighting operation throughout multiple properties in Cumberland County, New Jersey.”

Let’s extend the legislation that made this rescue possible to all animals. In the meanwhile, I’m happy these dogs have a chance at a new and peaceful life, :,)

✈️ UK Airline De-lists All Animal-Based Attractions:

• The British multinational airline EasyJet will stop promoting all tours that include animal-based attractions: marine parks, zoos, animal performances, animal rides, and sporting events involving animals are all off the table.

It’s far from responsible travel, but so much closer to silently shaming away practices that exploit non-Human animals.

🎪 Elephants Removed from “Great American Circus”:

• After countless protests and over 250,000 emails shaming the Hadi Shriners Circus and their sponsors, the circus was finally forced to stop using elephants in their acts.

This is hopeful news for the elephants, as they will be freed from slavery and bull hooks - cruel devices used to tear into their flesh to force a performance. Be free!

👗 Copenhagen Fashion Week Bans Exotic Animal Skins & Feathers:

• Denmark’s biggest fashion week will be free of animal skins from snakes and crocodiles as well as feathers.

Helsinki Fashion Week, Stockholm Fashion Week, and Melbourne Fashion Week have already banned exotic skins from their runways, but Copenhagen takes a step further by banning feathers as well. Just 2 years ago, they banned fur, so I hope in another two years they’ll ban all animal leather! Slowly but surely, we’re removing incentives to continue the cruel exotic animal trade.

🚫 Another Tyson Slaughterhouse Shutting Down:

• Due to decreased demand of meat and poultry, Tyson will be closing an Iowa slaughterhouse responsible for killing 9,000 pigs every day.

Last year, Tyson closed 6 Chicken killing facilities and 2 “case-ready meat processing plants.” This is the 3rd Tyson slaughterhouse closure of 2024, and the biggest thus far. Over the next year, this closure means 3.28 million pigs will be spared from Tyson’s cruelty. The world is a bit more peaceful now.

✅ IMPOSSIBLE Foods Opens up Cattle Rescue Ranch:

• Partnering closely with the former land owners, IMPOSSIBLE Foods is repurposing a 70-acre cattle ranch to grow soybeans, sunflowers, and coconut trees, all the while providing sanctuary to rescued Cows.

A slaughterhouse closes, and an animal sanctuary opens. This is the cycle we need to sustain for a VEGAN WORLD NOW.

🏭 CA Residents Will Vote to Ban Factory Farms:

• Direct Action Everywhere activists gathered >25,000 real signatures to get the initiative to ban concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) on the Sonoma County ballot.

This. Is. Huge. If voters pass this, it could be the catalyst that triggers a cascade of positive shifts in favor of animal rights worldwide. We’ll find out in November! :)

🌱 New Policy Requires CA County to Go Plant-Based:

• The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to make plant-based the default at 111 county-run facilities such as hospitals and schools.

While the intent of this policy is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this alone will spare thousands of farmed animals from needless suffering.

🐙 World’s 1st Octopus Farming Ban Passed:

• In Washington, USA, it is now illegal to farm Octopus.

One of the representatives in support of the bill sounded pretty Vegan to me:

“Octopus farming leads to suffering and sickness for one of the more intelligent and feeling animals in our oceans...[it] is unnecessary. It’s time to move on.”

Fortunately, we already have their replacement released this month! REVO Foods unveiled the world’s 1st Vegan Octopus made with 3D printed mycelium, dubbed, “The Kraken.”

It seems like lots of the traction around this ban revolved around intelligence. Even though we know the real question is “can they suffer?,“ wait until they hear about Pigs!

💄 Washington Bans Cosmetics Tested on Animals:

• The law prohibits the manufacturing AND sale of cosmetics tested on non-human animals.

Countless rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, and rats are all unnecessarily used for toxicity tests. Meanwhile, non-human models provide accurate predictions of safety for humans! This new law implicitly asserts this, and is a big step in the right direction for ending animal testing in the USA. Only 39 more states to go!

🍽️ German Nutritionists Encourage Plant-Based Diets:

• The German nutrition society Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung (DGE) emphasize reducing weekly meat consumption to <300 g (10.5 oz) and increasing whole plant consumption to at least 75%!

Ironically, this update marks a departure from Germany’s previous stance of advising against Veganism, and instead echoes the Nordic Nutritional Guidelines updated last year. At the same time, Germans are eating less meat than ever! The Dietary Guidelines for Americans updates in 2025, so here’s to hoping that the US follows the evidence too! :)

🏫 400+ Universities Make Plant-Based The Default:

• Plant-Based Universities strikes again, with students voting to make University of Cambridge’s student union 100% plant-based!

• Over 400 universities use Sodexo catering and serve >1 million students. Starting this month, they will consistently offer plant-based meals as the default choice on most days of the week.

This follows a peer-reviewed study I reported on last July, showcasing that their DefaultVeg program at pilot universities both preserved student choice and did not lead to a significant decrease in satisfaction. So many more students will get to know that Vegan food can be just as delicious!

🇮🇳 Living Vegan in India Getting More Popular and Easier:

• 62% of Indians participating in Veganuary said the Vegan lifestyle was easy to maintain, while 61% believed there were enough vegan food choices.

Nonetheless, the New Dehli International Food & Hospitality Fair - Aahar - will include plant-based meats for the 1st time. Furthermore, major hotel operators expect this demand to surge this year! The best part? 67% of Indians who choose plant-based products are motivated not by their health or the environment, but the animals.

🍔 BK Germany Makes Plant-Based Meals Cheaper Than Meat:

• Burger King Germany has the most plant-based items of any fast-food restaurant in the country: they offer a meat-free alternative for almost every menu item, and now they are all even cheaper!

Developed in collaboration with The Vegetarian Butcher, the chain will use new flower-shaped patties for its plant-based burgers to differentiate them from the slaughter-based burgers. It’s uplifting to know that the ethical option is not only cheaper but cuter too! :3

📈 EU Retailers See Massive Demand Increases for Plant-Based Foods:

• Tesco stated that plant-based eating is the biggest culinary trend this century and has reported increases in plant-based alternatives of up to 100% compared to 2023.

• In line with 69% of Dutch people eating meatless at least once a week, 7 dutch brands have agreed to make 50% of their suggested recipes meat-free.

People are choosing plant-based more and more often, and supermarkets can’t keep up!

🏅 2024 Olympics Doubles Plant-Based Food Options:

• This Summer, Paris will deliver 13 million meals during the Olympics – the equivalent of 10 football World Cup tournaments - to athletes, volunteers, collaborators, spectators, and media. Many of which will be plant-based!

To be in line with the Paris agreement, the Olympic games will need to halve its greenhouse gas emissions. It’s nice to see the French finally make food a part of this crucial equation!

🆕 Vegan Food Releases (US Edition):

• ☕️ Oatly now has flavored coffee creamers for your morning cup!

• 🌭 You can now get Vegan hot dogs at IKEA for a 70 cent lunch!

• 🍯 Make it spicy by topping it with Mellody’s new plant-based habanero honey!

🥛 1st Animal-Free Milk at Major Sporting Event:

• Strive Milk will be the 1st ever Animal-free dairy milk made with precision fermentation to be served at a major sporting event, The Miami Open!

This is a major milestone for this revolutionary food category. Eventually, Cow’s milk will be obsolete everywhere!

🍦 1st Ever Animal-Free Dairy Yogurts Released:

• Now a B-Corp corporation, Bored Cow unveiled the world’s 1st drinkable yogurt alternative made with milk proteins from fermentation instead of cows.

Released only in select New York retailers, the company plans for a national roll out of all its products later this year. Will you try them?

🥩 Tasters Want to Eat Cultivated Meat Again:

• In a survey, 107 tasters expressed a strong willingness to try cultivated meat again (a score of 4.41/5) and even recommending it to loved ones (4.45/5)!

Finally, we have the data published on these unique consumers. It seems cultivated meat does taste good enough after all!

🌭 Company Goes from Cell to Sausage in 4 Days:

• Meatable achieves the quickest cultivated meat production time in the world, making it 60 times faster than slaughter-based sausage production.

The previous record was 8 days and also set by Meatable. Less than a year later, that’s been halved. The next few years show a promising trajectory for cultivated meat efficiency, which will likely lead to reduced costs for all!

🧑‍🍳 Vegan Chef Gets Highest Score Ever in Cooking Competition:

• Kirk Haworth, co-founder of Vegan restaurant, Plates, got the highest score in the history of the Great British Menu regionals with an impressive 38/40, even with a round featuring fish!

Vegan chefs are constantly innovating what can be achieved with plants. This particular chef made caviar out of seaweed - genius!

• Mercy for Animals documented workers murdering Cows with sledgehammers. After 2 years of pressure from them and 750,000+ other activists, the slaughterhouse finally shut down, with future plans to legally ban this cruel practice.

Even in Brazil, the country with the 5th highest meat consumption, we are seeing progress!

🧑‍⚖️ Harvard Law Endorses Animal Rescue for Change:

In recent years, Animal Rights Activists have intentionally pursued criminal charges to highlight the backwards and unacceptable nature of our legal system.

• Harvard law cites historical accounts to propose that this voluntary prosecution is actually an integral part of social change, especially when there is a disconnect between the enforcement of law and public attitudes towards said industries.

It’s worked, and Harvard Law knows it. These are scary times ahead for factory farmers. >:)

• This Canterbury theater is nestled within an organic farm, has a 300-seat capacity, and will only allow Vegan food!

That’s right - not only will they only serve Vegan food, but they won’t allow slaughter-based food whatsoever. Finally, a safe movie theater where we won’t have to sit next to someone munching on corpses!
